Hinds,
George
September 1944

June 2024
George Hinds was born in St. Ann, Jamaica. He was the 9th of 10 children born to Peter and Olive Hinds. He grew up with his brothers:
Clement, Oscar (Willie), Malcolm, Peter, and Lloyd along with his sisters: Coreen, Veronica, Prudel and Gwenith.
When George was 3 years old, his family moved to the parish of St. Mary where his
father, Peter, was one of the founders of Lucky Hill Co-operative Farm, the first
registered farming co-op in Jamaica. He met his future wife, Melviner (nee Reid) at
13 years old when her family moved to the farming co-op. Together, they raised
children: Joan, Paulette (Osborne Burnett), Ainsworth (Sherryann), Brian, Michael
and Christina.
Although, he was trained as a mason, George’s first love had always been farming.
As a young father, he planted crops that he would sell to the vendors in the market
to support his family. He moved to Canada in 1972 where he always planted a
vegetable garden in the backyard. In the mid-1990s he started to spend 6 months of
the year in Jamaica where he was able to indulge his love of farming.
In March, 2024 George returned from his annual Jamaican trip. A few weeks later he
seemed lethargic but thought that he had caught a bad cold. He never complained
of feeling sick or in pain. On Sunday, June 2, he was taken by ambulance to the
Ajax Pickering Hospital despite his objections. By Friday of that week, they
discovered that he had a mass in his stomach and lymph nodes along with lesions
on his kidneys and liver. Due to the seriousness of his health condition, they
predicted that he had about 2 weeks to live.
The next morning just after 8:00 o’clock while in the middle of getting an EKG, his
heart suddenly stopped beating. George was pronounced dead on June 8, 2024.
Left to mourn are: Melviner, Joan, Paulette, Ainsworth, Brian, Michael and
Christina.
Grandchildren: Nicolette, Jennice, Michael jr., Jasmine, Jaydien, Breanna, Olivia,
Olivia Marie, Jayda, Shantelle, Braiden and Christian.
Siblings: Prudel Belle, Lloyd Hinds and Gwenith Lyons
Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
