Henry Gitelman
It is with heavy hearts that Henry’s family announces his passing on Wednesday, August 8, 2023, in Calgary. Devoted and dedicated husband of the late Judy Fink for fifty-four years. Loving father and father-in-law of Lewis and Debra, Akiva, Jay and Julie. Proud ‘Poppy’ and superfan of Julian (Joey), Dustin (Marla), and Mira. Predeceased by his brothers, Shepsel (Sam), and Morris. Henry will be greatly missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
Henry was born in Slawatycze, Poland on October 15, 1933. He and his family escaped at night while the Nazis occupied their shtetl, surviving the Holocaust in forced labour camps in Siberia, then Kazakhstan, and finally, DP camps after the war. Henry arrived in Canada in 1948 as a teenager unable to speak English, excelled in school and graduated from McGill University as a Mechanical Engineer. He valued honesty and integrity in all his relationships – business and personal. A voracious reader and a lifelong learner with an appetite for accomplishment, he skied, hiked, learned to kayak, took Chinese cooking lessons and entertained friends with authentic Chinese dishes, was involved in the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital and Montreal Holocaust Museum. Undaunted by any size project, he found and bought exactly what he wanted – an unfinished chalet on Lac Cache opposite Parc Tremblant, relaxing while working tirelessly, completing it over the years into a pristine, idyllic retreat for family and friends to enjoy. To his grandchildren, he was a constant presence and supporter of all their endeavors. In retirement, he immersed himself in Jewish Genealogy and his family’s survival story, learnt Polish, and meticulously researched his family tree and wrote his personal memoir.
Special thanks to the staff at AgeCare Glenmore in Calgary for their care and compassionate support. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, August 13 at 1:00 p.m. Burial at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Association Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva in Montreal from Sunday to Tuesday and will continue in Calgary on Thursday and Friday. Donations in Henry’s memory may be made to the Montreal Holocaust Museum, (514) 345-2605.
