Helena Kusiak (Sobon)
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, in Carleton Place, Ontario, on Friday April 21, 2023, at the age of 87 years.
Helena was born in Eleonorowka, Poland on Oct 7, 1935, and endured many hardships during WW2. At 4 ½ years of age, Helena and her family were among the roughly million Poles that were deported by the Russians deep into the Soviet Union, to Siberia. Along with her mother, Helena’s experiences took her through Russia, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, England and finally Canada in 1952, where they settled in Timmins.
Loving mother of Richard (Kathie) and Teresa (Jean-Guy). Cherished Baba (grandmother) of David, Valerie (Michael), Marcus (Suleiman), Lisa (Dylan), and Stephanie (Alex). Proud Baba to her great-grandchildren Ella, Felix, Darwyn and Leonardo. Predeceased by her loving husband Roman (2000), her mother Elzbieta (2009), her father Jozef (1942, Russia), step-father Bronislaw (1996), her brother Mieczyslaw (1942, Russia), her infant brother (1953), and sister Wiktoria (2020).
Mom was a long-time member of the Polish White Eagle Society Ladies Auxiliary, enjoying the fellowship of the other members, especially getting together to make pierogi, teaching Polish dancing to the children, and always looking forward to the Polish celebrations and the Saturday night dances at the Hall where Mom and Dad were magical on the dance floor. Mom had also been a long-time member of the Catholic Women’s League; Timmins Multi-cultural Festival Committee and the Timmins Horticultural Society. In earlier years, she enjoyed spending time at the cottage; loved to go fishing and hunting with Roman; enjoyed blueberry and mushroom picking, and took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens (winning many ribbons for best garden and vegetables). She was an amazing cook and took pleasure in cooking traditional Polish dishes and baking the best peach and rhubarb pies. She always loved the beauty of nature, and was so passionate about life, but what she cherished most was being with family, celebrating. For all who knew her, Mom will always be lovingly remembered for her incredible warmth and kindness, her generous spirit, and her sense of adventure.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Maria Bastin-Millar, Erin Adrain Wenzel and Kristine Hall for the care and compassion they provided to our mother/grandmother. Words of gratitude are not enough, and we count you as part of our family now.
The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Monday, May 1st, 2023 from the Miron-Wilson Chapel (Deacon Jake Gregorcic officiating). In Helena’s memory, donations to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. The family will receive friends on Monday May 1st from 10:00 am to 11:45 am at the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins, ON.
Rest in peace Mom. You will be forever missed, never forgotten, and always celebrated.
