Helen Manicom, née Wilson, passed away peacefully 24 June at Oxford Manor, Ingersoll, aged 86.
Helen was the most beloved wife, friend, and companion in life of Alton Manicom for 68 years.
She was the dear daughter of Violet Wilson (Haycock), deceased, and Robert Wilson, deceased.
She will be forever mom to Barb Emms (Ron), Brian Manicom (Catherine), David Manicom (Sophie), Carrie Stankevicius (Keith). She will be dearly missed by Teresa Marquis.
Helen was loved and will ever be present for the many members of her large family, including her brothers and sisters Leatta Johnson (deceased) (late Pat); Bernice Manicom (late Harold); Catherine Picard (late Glen); Marjorie Hoover (late Larry); Wally Wilson (Anne); Bill Wilson (Marie); Janet Bidwell (Gerry).
She was a beloved Nanna to her grandchildren Chris Emms (Ruby), Heather Donily (Kevin), Tamara Schmidt (Zack), Alisha Revie (Andrew), Brendan Manicom (Sabrina), Caitlin Marquis (Cooper), Jay Manicom, Adrian Manicom, Violette Manicom, Jenica VanGennip (Robert), Liam Stankevicius, Mary Stankevicius (Greg) and nine great-grandchildren.
Helen was born and raised in the countryside of Oxford County a few miles from Ingersoll, Ontario. She attended S.S.#3 school, often called the “Wilson School” due to the many families of that name who had built farms and raised families for five generations on the nearby concession roads. Although a talented student, who skipped grades due to her quick and observant mind, Helen had to leave school after grade 9 to support her family, working in banking and life insurance. Generosity was so much a part of her. One of her first paycheques bought skates for her little sister Janet, who could not otherwise have afforded them, and still remembers.
She married Alton in 1955. They soon began a family and bought the beautiful dairy farm on Highway 19 near Salford, whose barns and meadows and woods hold so many memories for her husband and children and grandchildren. She was a fine cook and gardener and a stalwart of Salford United Church. She loved birds and sunsets and trees and reading, and never stopped learning, often taking night school courses after busy days tending to farm and home and four children. Where did she find the energy for that? She had a lifelong passion for the poet Robert Frost. Her battered copy of his “collected poems” rarely left her bedside table. For the past 20 years her and Alton resided in Ingersoll and were part of the Trinity United faith community.
As a young girl, Helen was known to be the quickest to learn and the fastest runner, speeding home from school ahead of all the others. In more recent years, her health declined, and she suffered a great deal, in particular as she lost vision and mobility. But now her spirit is as light and swift again as that young girl, all the weight and cares have been lifted, and she is at peace.
Friends will be received at the McBeath-Dynes Funeral Home 246 Thames Street South, Ingersoll on Thursday June 29, 2023 from 10-11am, with the funeral service at 11am. Interment to follow at Harris Street Cemetery.
