Loftus, Helen (nee Grady)
Helen peacefully passed at Headwaters hospital at the age of 76 on Saturday October 14, 2023 after a brief fight with cancer. Wife of Les Loftus for 54 years and mother to Lesley, Neil and David. Sister to Louise Kennedy, Maureen Walker, Margaret Haggerty, George Grady (deceased) Billy Grady (deceased) and Jim Grady (deceased). Longtime friend to Marsha Canham , Sylvia Arthur, Andrena Wallace and Isobel Gallant.
Helen Loftus was a quiet but strong individual. Life started in working class Glasgow but really began with a trip to Canada at age 19 alongside her best friend for life, Isobel. In Toronto of the late 1960s she met her future husband and favourite person to boss around, Les. She loved her job at Bell Canada and her home at Jane and Finch but with the birth of her daughter Lesley, she decided to move to Orangeville where her twin sons, Neil and David, were born. Despite protests to the contrary, she always loved to brag or flash a photo of her kids.
Throughout her almost 77 years of life she exhibited her talents for cooking and sassy comebacks. She was an EA at Parkinson Centennial for close to 20 years and it was there that she demonstrated her empathy for others. There were many kids from Parkinson that she often fondly remembered. A lover of animals, numerous dogs enjoyed a decadent lifestyle under Helen’s care. She was also deserving of the title of “honorary detective” with the vast amounts of British mystery novels and tv shows she consumed.
She always claimed she liked to “tell it like it is” and so her family would like to end this short biography of the life of Helen by telling it like it is: you were deeply loved, you mattered and you will be missed. Peace be with you, fiery lady.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the kindness of the ICU nurses Sandra and Renee who were gifted in making Helen comfortable. There will be no service. If desired, donations can be made in memory of Helen to the SPCA or Headwaters Healthcare.
A tree will be planted in memory of Helen in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
