Obituary for Helen Kathleen Rettie
November 6, 1950 – July 26, 2024
RETTIE, Kathleen Helen, Kathy (Gowan) age 73, formerly of Coquitlam, BC passed away peacefully, Friday July 26, 2024, at Crossroads Hospice in Port Moody, with her husband Norman and immediate family at her bedside. She passed away after a 9-year battle with cancer. Kathy grew up in Vancouver, the youngest of 5 children and was a graduate of Sir Winston Churchill High School in Vancouver in 1969. She then went on to become a Registered Nurse and trained at VGH and St. Pauls’ Hospitals. She nursed at many other hospitals in the lower mainland for more than 35 years. She was highly respected for her knowledge, concern and well-being for patients, and by the colleagues she worked with over her long nursing career.
Kathy married Norman, the love of her life in 1973. She had a wonderful personality and loved to laugh and have fun with friends and family at their home and while living abroad in their San Jose del Cabo condo in Mexico. She enjoyed international travel with her husband, family pets, interior decorating, playing cards, word puzzles and various other activities to stimulate her mind. She was very «in vogue» in her selection of clothing, jewelry and furnishings and enjoyed shopping at various thrift stores and shops to find a great deal on the latest new or old item in style (to see how much money she could save Norm).
Kathy was predeceased in death by her parents John and Elizabeth Gowan (Collver), stepsister Barbara McInnes, and sister-in-law Sandy Rettie. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years Norman, son Luke Rettie and his wife Normandie and 2 grandsons Callum and Carter, daughter Kaeleigh (Arsens) and husband Dino, 2 granddaughters, Poppy and Paige, brothers Michael (Karin), Ross (Wendy), Tom (Sharon) and sister Nancy, sister in law Scampi (Larry), and brother in law Steve and sister in law Joanie (Walt), and Uncle Ross Collver and Aunt, Helen Overgaard and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given by the Crossroads Hospice in Port Moody and to Mayzette her lovely care aid who was at Kathy and the families side.
Condolences may be sent to the family to Norman at nrettie@shaw.ca or via the form at the bottom of this page.
