Helen Elizabeth Goheen (24 Dec 1937–28 Aug 2024)
An incredible wife, mother, grandmother, soon to be great grandmother, and dear friend to all, Helen Elizabeth Goheen left us peacefully on 28 August with her husband of 65 years and two sons at her side. After a very brief period with an aggressive lymphoma, she passed without suffering. She spent the last days of her life under the incredible care and compassion of the staff and volunteers at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Kanata/Ottawa.
An incredibly loving and giving matriarch, Helen will be deeply missed by all: the love of her life, Ralph; her 2 sons, Kevin (Susan) and Colin (Julie); her grandchildren Benjamin (Alison), Casey (Patricio), Joshua (Jenina) and Taylor (Dominic); and many, many other dear family and friends.
Born just north of Port Hope, Ontario, Helen grew up as the lone child on her parents farm (George and Mina Coates; note, older brother Donald Albert died in infancy), located on the 5th concession. After a serendipitous first encounter of her future mate while singing in the church choir at age 12, Ralph’s sister Doris formally connected the two as adults — love was born. Married at the age of 21, Helen became a Mom at 22, and then again at 31. Her greatest gifts in life were her “3 boys” and, since then, has been blessed with many beautiful additions to her family fold. Her endless support and countless personal sacrifices allowed her joy in watching her family succeed and find happiness through her efforts.
Starting in sales and accounts receivable with Bell Telephone, Helen then enjoyed a full career managing refinery inventory at Eldorado Nuclear/Cameco for 20+ years (math was always her strong suit). In retirement, Ralph and Helen spent 26 winters away from the ice and cold at successive homes they owned in Arizona…Helen goes on record as hating any temperature under 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They also travelled extensively throughout the world fostering lifelong friendships with many.
Never one to miss out on a party, Helen and Ralph were blessed to be able to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on 10 August (officially the 26th of September) at the Bradley Residence in Kanata. In attendance were her immediate family, including all grandchildren and their partners (and a soon to be great grandson in October). As well, Helen’s bridge friends and some close neighbours shared in the celebration which helped put our struggles aside for the better part of the day. Helen was the highlight of the party and lit up the room with her infectious smile and the twinkle in her eyes…the red wine helped! Everyone at the party loved and will long remember her bountiful hugs and energizer bunny-like spirit.
An intimate family celebration of Helen’s life will be held in the next few weeks at the Bradley Residence Chapel in Kanata. Her ashes will be kept by Ralph until such time as they both are interred at the Union & St John’s Cemetery in Port Hope. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Ottawa Hospice Association – Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in memory of Helen via the link below.
For those who know Helen well, it’s certain that today in Heaven she’ll be baking up a storm (her pies and devilled eggs were world renowned and she knew everyone’s favourite), will have a bridge game planned for this afternoon, and will be spreading joy at happy hour.
Rest in peace Cookie, Mom, Nana, Helen. We love you!
