Obituary
It is with heavy hearts, but with gratitude for the long life she lived, that we announce that Helen M Dakin passed away on January 4th at Lakeview Manor in Riverview at the age of 92. Born in Saint John, N.B. she was the twin daughter of the late James and Lorna Curry. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Eric Dakin, sister Eileen Small, dear twin Jean Salmon and brother in law Jim Salmon.
Helen attended schools in New Richmond QC, Rothesay, Saint John and graduated from high school in Sackville, N.B. She went on to graduate as an RN from Saint John General Hospital in 1953 and worked as a nurse there until moving to Dartmouth in 1971 where she became a realtor. She excelled in this role and thrived on meeting new people through selling homes.
Mom was a true social being. She sparked up conversation with almost everyone she met, including on her daily walks with her dogs. Mom found joy in being outdoors, soaking up the sun and being near the water. She enjoyed swimming, camping, curling, gardening, playing bridge, was a talented seamstress who could mend anything. She was also a gracious hostess. Family and friends enjoyed many great meals and fun, memorable times around her dining table. Charitable organizations could count on Mom to canvass her neighbourhood and she was a lifelong blood donor. Her zest for life brought her to visit many places around the country and around the world – her independence shining through.
Her presence will be dearly missed by her children Barbara Oickle (Scott) Moncton, and James Dakin (Sharon) Calgary, grandchildren Daniel Steeves (Missy) Edmonton, Ryan Oickle (Connie) Penticton, Lauren Manning (Colin) Moncton, Tanner Dakin (Stephanie) Calgary, Reigner Baysal (Ayeberk) Calgary and seven sweet great grandchildren, as well as niece Leslie Johnston (Patrick) Bedford, nephew Larry Salmon (Luan) Saint John.
In 2019 Mom found love with Hal Williams in Moncton and had a special relationship with Hal’s daughter Debi Maxted (Rick) Riverview.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd., Moncton on Thursday from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm, followed immediately by a service to celebrate and honour Helen’s life at 2 pm. in the Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel, with a reception to follow in the Funeral Home Reception Center.
Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John in the spring.
