August 29, 1930 – August 14, 2023
Helen Bernice (Mangels) Dahl was born on August 29th, 1930, on the family farm near Carrot River, and passed away at the Manitou Lodge in Watrous on August 14, 2023, after a 7-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was the youngest child of Elmer and Elsa Mangels. Mom was the last surviving sibling to Delmar (Kay) Mangels, Doug (Lois & June) Mangels, Madeline (Jim) Hill, and Betty (Bart) Carroll.
As the disease progressed, she kept her friendly demeanor, caring personality, and her sense of humour. Last summer, she was making sure we all were happy with our lives and that everything was taken care of.
The love of her life, Earl Carmen Dahl, predeceased her on January 15, 2017. In her later years, she often talked about how much she missed Earl and that they had spent a lifetime together because they met when she was 18. She graduated with a grade 12 in Carrot River and went on to work at the Royal Bank there. She worked as a teller and became the first woman accountant in Saskatchewan with the RBC. Dad was the manager of a grocery store, and they met each other at a dance. They were smitten with each other and married on October 6, 1951. They moved from Carrot River to Saskatoon for a brief period. The next move to Watrous was to be permanent.
Mom was actively involved in the community by being a long standing member of the United Church Ladies Unit 6, a member and president of the Kinettes and the K-Ettes, a member of the Watrous Figure Skating Executive, a member of the Longlake Unit Band Executive, a member of the Watrous Diabetic Association, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels well into her 80s, and the secretary treasurer for many groups including the condominium association where she lived. She had to give that up in 2018 due to Alzheimer’s. She was also an avid gardener throughout her life and continued to can tomatoes, make pickles, and tend the garden until 2009 when mom and dad moved to the condominium in 2010.
Mom was also incredibly talented at sewing, and she sewed many of our clothes when we were younger. She continued to sew and try new things throughout her life. She was also an exceptionally good cook and baker. We were lucky enough to come home every noon hour during our school years to a home cooked meal or arrive home after school to the smell of homemade buns. Mom also loved to read and there was always a small pile of books or magazines around. She continued to read the paper daily until last year. She had a wealth of knowledge.
Mom and Dad had such a close circle of friends that they continued to get together throughout the decades. Both mom and dad loved dancing, and it was quite common that they were out with friends on Saturday nights to Danceland. They also partook in many parties and gatherings with their friends. They had an extremely active social life. Friends and relatives knew they could drop in unannounced, and they would always be welcomed.
Mom always cared for her family and friends. Whether it was phone calls, visits, helping with grandchildren or her adult children, she was so very generous with her time and love. She provided funds for her two Norwegian granddaughters, Inga-Lisa and Liv-Anita, to visit Canada every couple of years so that they would know their family. Having the grandsons, Steven and Calvin, come and stay at the family home in Watrous was a regular occurrence while the boys were young. She did regret that she felt too old to help much with grandson, Ole. She continued to send cards and make phone calls until she could not anymore due to Alzheimer’s.
Mom was a beautiful woman inside and out. She is often described as friendly, nice, and classy. She always had her hair done and was well dressed. Even in her later years, she would often ask where her purse was because she may need her lipstick.
She will be missed by many, but last summer she said many times that she had an exceptionally good life and was ready to go. She was not afraid of death and always knew that it was a natural part of life.
We would like to give a special thank you to Lety Schalm who helped mom so much in so many ways in her later years. A special thank you to the owners and staff at Warm and Cozy in Saskatoon that provided mom with a wonderful place to live for 4 years while she needed more care but surprisingly did not qualify for public long-term care. Also, a special thank you to everyone at the Watrous District Health Complex (Manitou Lodge) in Watrous that cared for mom for the last 18 months.

Mom’s memorial service will be Saturday, October 7th, at 11:30 AM at the Watrous United Church with lunch to follow. A private interment will take place later.
