Hayward Thomas Stanley Peddle passed away on January 13, 2023 at the Carbonear General Hospital at the age of 90.
Hayward was born on August 5, 1932 to Absalom and Cecilia (Stanley) Peddle in Bears Cove, Harbour Grace, the first of 9 children.
He spent the majority of his working years employed with W.A. Munn & Co. from where he retired in 1996. He loved a game of cards, a nice drink of whiskey or a cold brew. Hayward was an armchair athlete who enjoyed watching soccer, baseball and hockey. He DID NOT like the Montreal Canadiens! He had a roaring laugh that could almost break the sound barrier and a sense of humour that earned him the reputation of being a «character».
Hayward is pre-deceased by his wife, Mary (Quigley); grandson Lee Meadus; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon & Margaret Peddle; Don & Glenys Peddle; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Otis Meritt and in his childhood, his little brothers, Max and Roy and little sister, Joan. He is the last of the «gang» to leave this world and they’re sure to have a grand reunion when they get together again.
Left with a plethora of memories are his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Lloyd Meadus, of Harbour Grace and granddaughter, Fay Meadus (Steve Bowman), of Paradise. His brother, Bill (Sylvia) Peddle and sister Carol (Walter, deceased) Parsons both of Harbour Grace along with his sister Jean (Art, deceased) Mercer of Shearstown are left to mourn the loss of their big brother. As a brother-in-law he leaves with fond and lasting recollections, Ann & Dennis McCarthy of Harbour Grace, Alice (Mike, deceased) O’Keefe of Carbonear, Grace (Robert, deceased) Quigley of Paradise and Margaret (Mason Lee, deceased) Langston of Savannah, Georgia along with all the nieces and nephews of the Peddle and Quigley clans. The staff and residents of Lane’s Luxury Estates will hold Hayward’s memory close to their hearts and he’ll surely be missed at the card table. Mr. Joe Greeley of Harbour Grace, who «adopted» him all those years ago, also shares our loss.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Carbonear Hospital Emergency Department for their care and patience during dad’s numerous visits during the last few weeks. To Dr. Howse and the nurses of the 6th and 7th floors, your care and compassion during dad’s final days were above and beyond what we could ever have expected.
In lieu of flowers, as expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in his loving memory to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or service and a private burial will take place at a later date.
Condolences may be written to the family at: sladesfuneralhome.ca , on the Memory Wall section of the obituary. For further information please call Slade’s Funeral Home, Carbonear at 596-1212.
