Obituary of Harry Elliott
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Elliott on January 10, 2023 at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre at the age of 82 years. Harry was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Alice (Cater) Elliott who passed away less than six months ago on August 8, 2022. Harry was born in Norris Arm, NL and was the son of the late Edgar and Lorraine Elliott (nee Dyke). He was also predeceased by his sisters Christine and Violet (Buffett) and his brother John.
Harry was the oldest son of 12 children born to Edgar and Lorraine. He spent his early childhood in Norris Arm but moved with him family outside of Grand Falls to the Botwood Highway (now Grenfell Heights) where he lived the rest of his life. He met his wife, Alice, at the age of 17, married at 19 and began their family. From a very early age, Harry began working and worked hard every day, even well into retirement. He had a respected career with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro for over 30 years where he began as a linesman and ended as Transmission Supervisor. His work ethic and his charismatic ability to lead groups of men was well known to all those who had the privilege of being part of his crew. Harry was very proud of his four sons (Bob, Jim, Brian and Cory) and the successes of their company, Elliott Brothers. He loved to be involved in their daily work activities and would spend his days off in the woods working alongside them. Harry liked being busy and spent countless hours each fall cutting, splitting and stacking wood. He never went far from “the land” and acted as both a gatekeeper and greeter to anyone who came by. He loved to talk and tell stories about his many past adventures. He loved to dance and enjoyed attending the yearly “New Year’s Ball” with his wife, Alice. Harry was a generous and giving person who never let you leave his house without giving you something to take with you. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to share his stories and jokes with them. Harry was rough and as-tough-as-they-come and his larger than life presence will be missed.
Left to mourn but with a lifetime of memories are his sons Robert (Jackie), Jim (Hazel), Brian (Shirley-Ann), Cory (Laura), his sisters; Pauline Gilbert (Lou), Shirley Wyatt (Bob), Lorraine Mitchell (Gid), and Juanita Elsworth (Clarence), his brothers; Randy (Betty), Bruce (Debbie), Terry (Debbie), Clarence (Bessie) his grandchildren; Matthew (Natalie) and Melissa, Hollie (Lee) and Ashley (Bob), Jamie (Jamie) and Megan (Nigel), Jake and Jesse. Also, great-grandchildren; Robert and William Sullivan, Levi, Vayda and Fynn Bath, Anna Elliott, Henry, Joey, Simon and Maggie Norman. He also leaves to mourn many loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as a large circle of family and friends.
We would like to thank the staff of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre who helped care for Harry during the last five months, especially the staff of 3B/2D. We would also like to thank those who helped support him (and our family) during his illness, including Dr. Christy Noftall and Nurse Practitioner Anne Blackmore with the Provincial Home Dementia Care Program.
In keeping with Harry’s wishes, cremation will take place and there will be no funeral service.
