LAWRY, Harry
With great sadness, the family of Captain Tuckett “Harry” Lawry announce his peaceful passing at the age of 96 on Friday 6 Jan 2023 at Parkwood Veteran’s Hospital in London, Ontario, where family were with him constantly throughout his last journey.
Harry was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather to daughter Kathleen and her late husband, Clair, to his son Clive (Janet), to his granddaughters Jennifer Jantzi (Justin), Katie and Laura, and to his great-grandson Jonas Jantzi.
He was predeceased by his wife Nanette (nee Hukin), his son Victor, his sister Sally Williamson and his brother Robert (Bob) Lawry.
He is remembered fondly by many close relatives and friends including Gordon Williamson of Burlington, Judy Lawry of Dunnville, Robert Hall of Tavistock (Liz), Cynthia Hemmelder-Clarke of Woodstock, and Dorothy Mariner (Desmond) of Darlington, England.
Harry was born in Los Angeles, California on 16 Jan 1926 to Thomas Henry Tuckett Lawry and Anna Ernestine (Friedl) Lawry. The family moved to Hamilton, Ontario in 1931 and Harry grew up on Beach Boulevard with his brother Bob and sister Sally.
Harry joined the RCAF in 1942. He trained in St Thomas, London, Fort MacLeod, and Yorkshire, England, and served in WWII in England as an airplane mechanic at Dishforth, Croft, and Middleton St George.
Harry met his wife Nanette Hukin in 1948, after seeing her swinging on a porch swing. They were married in 1949.
Harry served 33 years in the RCAF. After the War, he was stationed in Canada (Calgary, Trenton, Camp Borden, Toronto (Downsview), Guelph), France (Metz), and Lahr).
Following retirement from the RCAF, Harry worked with his close friend, the late Pacifico (Puss) Valeriote, at Valeriote Electronics and Victrix Ltd.
Harry was active in the Legion (Guelph, Tavistock), the Masons (Germany (Lahr), Canada (Guelph, Tavistock), the Rotary (Stratford) and the Shriners (London). He was a member of the Tavistock Men’s Club and the Tavistock Historical Society. He was a member of St Paul’s Anglican church in Stratford and the Ecumenical chapel at Parkwood.
Harry loved helping others and advocated and for individuals and community alike with a constant persuasive kindness and intelligence. He helped other Veterans apply for benefits, enjoyed delivering poinsettias to residents at retirement and nursing homes, and took delight in driving his homemade Shriner car in local parades to collect donations for burn hospitals
.
He was a good man, a devoted family man, a gentleman; genuine, caring and always cheerful company.
Friends and relatives are invited to pay their respects at a celebration of life/memorial service at Francis Funeral Home, Tavistock on Saturday, 14 Jan 2023 from 2 to 4 pm.
