Harold UPHILL Obituary
Harold “Puppy” Uphill passed away peacefully with this family by his side on December 23, 2024. He was born in Fernie, BC on December 7, 1937. He was 87 years old.
Harold is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Marlene; siblings, Shirley (Haukaas), Bob (Karen), Glenn (Carol), and Donald (Donna). Together, Harold and Marlene built a family, creating a lifetime of memories. Harold leaves behind his daughters, Kellie (Rick) Tilsner and Carrie (Chris); son, Brett (Erin), and his grandchildren: Jessie (Robin) Harper, Travis (Brittnay), Blair (Kyle), Shelby-Lee (Zane) Yuszko, Austen, Linnea (Bradon), and Sierra. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Reid, Ellie, Hayden, Arlen, Everett, and Nash.
Harold was predeceased by his parents, Vernon and Louise (Phillips), and his brother, Tom.
Harold started his career with East Kootenay Power in Fernie which later became BC Hydro. He retired after 37 years as a subforeman electrician.
Harold was a great athlete and avid outdoorsman. He was an outstanding hockey player and played defense for the Fernie Rangers, at the young age of 16. His skills and athleticism led to a scholarship with the University of Montana. He was offered contracts with other American teams but chose to return to his home in Fernie. He continued to play hockey in Fernie for years, where he was known for his ability to skate backwards faster than most others could skate forwards.
Harold’s true passion was horses, a love he carried with him throughout his life. He often enjoyed sharing stories of his time as a wrangler for Jack Cutts and his adventures on the rodeo circuit with his cousins Grenny, Jack, and Marvin, as well as his sister Shirley. The family discovered an old article in the Free Press reporting that Harold had won the Boys 16 & Under Steer Riding at the Calgary Stampede. When his children asked him about it, he humbly remarked, “It wasn’t a big deal in those days.” In his later years, Harold continued to pursue his passion for team roping, riding his spirited horse, Willy, right up until the very end.
Harold’s favourite place was the Flathead, where he was proud to be considered one of the valley’s pioneers. Recognizing its beauty, he and his close friends—Eddy, Bob, Carlo, Marvin, Ernie, Larry, George, and Skinny—built a cabin in 1956 that became a retreat for fishing and hunting. In later years, Harold enjoyed welcoming visitors, often sharing a cold beer and a B.S. Over time, the Flathead became the backdrop for many friendships, including those with Doug, Henry, Emil, Denny, Wayne, Art, Bill and Jewelle, Dave and Marilyn, Patty, Steve, Darren, Kim and Deb, Ted, George and Marilyn, Bernard, Jeff, Warren and Deb, Keith, Helmut, as well as his nephews Jason, Colton, and Mark, and many others.
Harold loved taking horse trips and exploring. One of his favourite trips was when Art and Brett joined him on a ride from Grasmere, navigating their way for several days into the Flathead. Another trip he often talked about was into the Kintla from Kishinena.
He was known for his toughness, resilience, and hard work ethic. But he always had a soft spot for his family.
The family wishes to have a celebration of life this summer at his favourite place.
