Obituary
Mahaney, Gregory, Thomas – 70, of Shelburne, Nova Scotia.
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces his passing at Yarmouth regional Hospital on February 21, 2024; with family by his side.
Born in Trenton, Ontario, on April 26, 1953, he was the son of the late Charles and Barbara Mahaney.
As a military family, there were lots of moves, but also access to excellent recreational facilities. Greg excelled at all sports, but in particular hockey, basketball and baseball. He was coach of the South Shore Mustangs, and Bridgewater’s Glen Murray was a big part of that team.
After completing basic training, Greg did a short stint in the Air Force. His first posting was to Alert, above the Arctic Circle. Upon returning to Shelburne, he built his first commercial building, which is now Uncle Sid’s. He was proud of the progress until his grandfather, George (who was a master carpenter), inspected it and said the centre beam was wrong, knocked it out, and they had to start over! He had a successful carpet business there for many years, even doing contracts in the Arctic. Sister Tammy had her hairdressing shop there as well.
He was a councillor at the Shelburne School for Boys and held the difficult position of Chief Shop Steward. From there, he became the manager of Liberty Tax Services in Barrington passage. It was during that time that his long nine year battle with serious health issues began. The business thrived under his leadership, and he continued to work for several years as he did not want to let his many respected clients down.
Greg was happiest in the great outdoors. Growing up, Brilynn and Hannah fondly remember all the trips with Uncle Greg; exploring the shoreline and beaches, piggyback rides, and their favourite treats at Gills Convenience Store.
Later, he and his friends all bought motorcycles and travelled to Cape Breton to visit Barry. Trips to Dave’s camp with his buddies David, Danny, Jackie and Timmy were the best. His last outing was two summers ago when family came from New Brunswick and 13 of us waded out to Cranberry Island. Greg was so happy to show them this magical place owned by our dear Austrian friends, Hans and Michael.
Lifelong memories are coffee runs and driving “the loop” with his buddy Sam; treasured trips to the Miramichi; New Year’s Eve spent with Trish and Gerry in East Jordan, eating lobster and playing crib half the night (Greg and Gerry actually stayed up!); rooting for the Blue Jays with his dad, Tracy, Darren, and family. Greg always impressed them with the stats on each player and Charlie said he knew more than the announcers. Many evenings were spent watching hockey or Blue Jays with George as Joan would sneak in with her latest creations for her cookbook. The Raptors were a must see and Alex and Greg watching the Golden State Warriors win the championship was a classic.
Greg faced his many health challenges with independence, dignity, and fierce determination. He never gave up, never complained, and was always more concerned about his loved ones and caregivers.
He always said there were many people worse off other than him. His inability to eat or drink for the last five years made the rest of us not take anything for granted. This positive attitude left a lasting impression on everyone, including his doctors, who repeatedly said he was the strongest person they had ever met. Can’t help but think that sister Tammy, praying at the Vatican the day of his heart surgery made it so.
Thankfully, Greg was an avid reader, which got him through many pain filled nights. His mind stayed sharp and he had a keen interest in US politics. He was blessed to have a strong support system in Linda, Tracy, Helen and Woody, Darian and Jennifer, Jeff and Rhonda, Sam and John. His beloved grandchildren, Maggie and Anakin, brought him so much joy and he was very proud of them. Videos of the youngest family members, Esmee and Madi brought big smiles. Family cats, Cleo and Piper, provided at home entertainment and company.
The VON became a key component to him being able to remain home between hospital stays. Their care and compassion was so appreciated. Special thanks to our nurse practitioner, Maria Ceschiutti, who always went above and beyond to do everything possible. Outstanding doctors over the years started with Dr. Hart and Dr. Trites (his EA, Lisa) at the QEII; Dr. Burrill, Dr. Blackadar and Dr. Mackinnon at Queens General; and compassionate Dr. Eissa at Yarmouth Regional. Also, two outstanding nurses, Marc at Queens General and Dom at Yarmouth Hospital. Greg was admitted many times to Roseway Hospital and always received the best care. When Greg was in crisis on February 13, Shelly Nickerson, Chastity, and Dr. Fatima saved him. You are amazing! Shout out to our overworked and dedicated ambulance attendants; you give all of your patients 100% and we know they are in good hands. Thank you!
Greg is survived by his common law wife, Linda; his son Stacen, Florida; his daughter Blythe, Alberta; brothers Lynwood (Woody), Lower Sackville; Timmy, Shelburne; Tony (Erica) Blackfalds, Alberta; Sisters Tammy Murray (Ken), Tabusintac, NB; Tracy Fournier (Darren), South Nelson, NB; Stepson Darian Huskilson (Jennifer); Grandchildren Maggie and Anakin, Bridgewater; sister in law Sheila (Elgin) Thomas, Jordan Falls; brother in laws David (Nan) Holden, Roseway; and Russell (Marjorie) Holden, Jordan Falls. Commendation at the gravesite and interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Shelburne will be at 3 PM, on June 22, 2024, followed by an outdoor celebration of life at the family property on Ryers Lane, Shelburne.
