Gordon Brown Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Gordon Brown announce his passing on
November 30, 2024.
Gordon was born and raised in Claresholm, Alberta, where he grew up on the family
farm and attended school. After graduation, he attended the University of Alberta.
Gordon worked in Yellowknife, NWT as well as the Crowsnest Pass. While working in
the Pass, Gordon met his future wife, Mary McDougall. They were married on October
24, 1953, and moved onto the family farm. Gordon and Mary were happy in their
choice and settled into raising a family and putting down roots. Branching out, Gordon
achieved a Master Electrician Certificate, founding Brown Electric some time
afterwards. A dedicated and fair professional Gordon worked in this field well into his
eighties.
Gordon was deeply involved in his community, serving in many capacities over the
years. He was a Cub and Scout leader, a long-standing member of the Lions Club, a
member of the local curling club, and a founding member of the Claresholm Hospital
Board. Gordon was known for his commitment to others, leadership, and sense of
humour. Affable, approachable, and generous Gordon struck lasting relationships in a
community he loved.
Gordon enjoyed his life. He was an avid outdoorsman, brokering a love for fishing,
hunting, camping. He was a member of the local trap club, dedicated to bettering his
score. But there was so much more to his passions, an obsession for giving that defies
quantification. Gordon enjoyed an impromptu game of softball with friends and family as
staged in an obliging mountain field, a relaxing walk from Fort McLeod to Claresholm in
the task to raise money for community work, a motorcycle tour through the depths of a
fast-running stream. He entered into each with a verve that proved contagious, and of
course the requisite period for recovery.
Generous with his time and skills, Gordon was always ready to lend a helping hand. He
was renowned for his wit and his ability to tell captivating stories. His openness and
generosity won hearts wherever he ventured. Gordon possessed a sharp intellect and a
keen interest in everything and everyone. Gordon’s home was always open to family,
friends and newcomers.
Above all, Gordon loved spending time with his family. He was a devoted and loving
son, husband, father, and a doting grandfather. In his final years, his enthusiasm for life
and sense of humor never wavered, and he remained a source of warmth and joy for all
who knew him.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Judy (Kevin) Bolton; son, Doug; and
son-in-law Arthur Todd; his grandchildren, Summer Duval, Megan Brown, Brandele
Brown and Dempsey Bolton; niece Patricia (Brian) Novosel and grandniece Sarah (Tim)
Ulbrich. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Eva Brown; his wife,
Mary; daughters Barbara (Colquhoun) and Susan; and his daughter-in-law Janeen
Brown.
Gordon’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Leishman and the
medical staff at Claresholm General Hospital for their excellent care and compassion,
as well as the staff at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre for their warmth and
supportive care. Special thanks must be given to Margie Morkin for her kindness and
devotion.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the
King Catholic Church, 344-50 Ave. W., Claresholm, Alberta.
