Glenn Albert Dorey
75, Hubbards Nova Scotia. With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved brother and uncle on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the palliative care unit of the VG hospital in Halifax after a lengthy stay in the Hematology and Oncology Unit. He was born December 30, 1947 in Bridgewater NS; he was the son of the late Albert and Esther (Nauss) Dorey.
As a young boy Glenn enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. Glenn spent summers with his Nauss grandparents in Mahone Bay where he participated in the St. James Church Boys’ League. Later, he continued his interest in sports by coaching baseball and hockey, encouraging the youth of Hubbards to participate in team sports. Glenn enjoyed playing on a number of different hockey teams around St. Margaret’s Bay up until a year before his illness.
Glenn loved the woods and lakes behind the family home where he grew up. In his younger years he enjoyed snaring rabbits, then skating across the lakes to get home. He always loved to dance and could often be found on the dance floor at the Shore Club in Hubbards or any local dance taking place. He was also known to sing karaoke.
Glenn worked in many different industries over the years and in many different regions of the country. He loved Canada and took many opportunities to travel, live and work within its vast borders. From Nickel Mines in Northern Ontario to warehouses in Alberta, Glenn was known locally by some for having visited every small town in Canada. Glenn had a deep love for the forest and spent much of his life working in the woods. He spent many years logging and selling timber for himself on family land as well as for others. He spent some time planting trees in various regions of Canada as well as spacing and clearing trees for local NS silviculture companies. Glenn spent much of the last decade working as a commissionaire up until September 2022.
Though Glenn spent many years away, his favourite place and people on earth were right at home in Hubbards. Living away helped Glenn realize how beautiful his home was. He was very passionate about knowing and learning about his own and local heritage. So much so, that many locals often turned to Glenn for his immense knowledge of the people and places in St. Margarets Bay. Much of his knowledge was passed down from friends and family. Glenn loved to yarn with anyone who’d lend an ear, but he also gained a lot of knowledge from spending hours of many days in the Archives of Nova Scotia, where he thoroughly researched genealogy and local history. Unfortunately Glenn’s memory, full of knowledge will remain with him, therefore, our human library has been lost.
Affectionately known as Uncle Glenn to his two nieces and nephew and many of their close friends, Glenn was more than just an uncle, he was an immediate family member. He was always welcomed and included in family meals and celebrations. We will miss his presence and have lasting memories of our UG.
Glenn is survived by sister and brother in law, Anne and Andy Hare, Hubbards; niece and goddaughter, Allyson (Shannon) McKinnon, Queensland; niece, JoAnne Hare (David Millar) and nephew Steven (Sarah) Hare, all of Hubbards. He was very proud of his great nieces and nephews, Christina, Mitchell, Ava, Iyla, Caleb, Ebbi and Bonnie.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Christine Allyson.
The family would like to thank the staff at Unit 8.A VG Site and the Palliative Care Unit 7.A for their loving care, support and guidance during Glenn’s illness and final days.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. He will be buried with his family in Pine Hill Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 27th at 11am at St. Luke’s Church in Hubbards, reception to follow in the church hall. Donations can be made in Glenn’s memory to the Hubbards and Area Food Bank or the Atlantic Region Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
