Gerrit Cornelis Ankersmit Obituary
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved brother Gerrit Cornelis Ankersmit, commonly known as Charlie at the age of 71. Predeceased by his parents Egbert and Eke Ankersmit, Charlie is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Ineke (Hens) VandenBos, Hans (Erika) Ankersmit and Johanna (Rob) Janssen, nephews, nieces, and family in Western Canada and the Netherlands.
His story. Charlie and his family immigrated from the Netherlands to Canada in June 1957. As a boy, his passion for animals and nature and a heart for rescue meant sharing our people spaces with the four-legged kind, or the winged kind. As a family, who could argue when they too were created by God in need of help? In time, his passion for nature grew. He acquired a motorcycle, one he gave up for a time and later returned to, perhaps to be nearer to nature, feel the wind against his face, the ripple through his shirt. He’d stop at will, listen to the bird’s chirp, smell the pine-trees, or feel the tinge of snow as he watched deer and doe dart about. Although he had many good friends, some up north who he’d visit regularly, all would agree that his most fast and trusted friend was his dog, more recently, Shania. He adored her.
Gardening was another love and feeding birds—for them he’d offer a feast, a quasi-retreat to the sound of a soft trickle of water pumping from a fountain, a peaceful sound to be enjoyed by anyone who happened by.
This was our brother. He loved life, family, friends, and as above, all things nature. And he loved Jesus.
God’s story. When confronted with failing health issues a few years ago, Charlie called on God for help. He received the Lord Jesus as his Saviour.
Ephesians 2:8. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”
Visitation will take place at Tallman Funeral Homes 3277 King St. Vineland on Friday July 19, 2-4 pm and 6-8pm. Interment and a family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
