In Loving Memory of Geraldine MacKinnon (nee Carding)
April 4th, 1939 – September 24th, 2024 (85 years)
On Tuesday September 24th, 2024, at the Maison McCulloch Hospice surrounded by the love of her 3 daughters, Geraldine (Geri) gained her wings and flew to reunite with the love of her life, husband of 55 years, Frank MacKinnon (predeceased 2014).
Treasured mother of Karen Makela (Esa), Vicki Train (Craig Terry), Dyan Lynn Eybergen (Rob). Cherished grandmother of Vanesa and Evan Makela, Daryan and Keldan Train, Kohan, Nolan and Talen Eybergen. Beloved daughter of Albert (Bert) and Esther (Mickey) Carding (both predeceased). Loving sister of Doe Helm (Tucker, predeceased), Butch Carding (Colette), Patricia Evans (Gord), Diane White (Richard) and Chris Carding (Roxane). Sadly, missed by many loved nieces, nephews and friends.
It’s always difficult to find the right words to describe a woman who was so kind, nurturing, cheeky, and incredibly funny. Mom would light up a room with her smile and laughter, had a great love for music (especially her secret boyfriend Keith Urban) and immensely enjoyed dancing. With a severe case of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) she hated the idea of leaving a party early, or not being there for every special moment.
Geri was so many things: a woman who lived her life according to God’s word, devoted to her faith, serving God through her church Christ Anglican, Lively, an adored wife, a mother who treasured her children, a grandmother who cherished every moment with her grandchildren, a sister and a friend who lifted the spirits of everyone around her. She was the heart and soul of our family, making us all feel like the center of her universe because, to her, we were. There was no better place she’d rather be than surrounded by her family and wonderful friends, enjoying the simple moments that make life so beautiful. Whether it was time spent at our family camp on Lake Manitou, a recent trip to the shores of Inverness Cape Breton, a holiday gathering, or just a random Tuesday night, if her family was there, Mom was happy.
Geri took immense pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She made sure we knew how proud she was, always encouraging us to dream big, to reach for the stars, and to never settle. When we succeeded, no one celebrated more than she did. It was as if our triumphs were her own, and in many ways, they were, because she was always right behind us, offering wise, sound advice, lifting us up and cheering us on.
Five years ago, our Mom suffered a hemorrhagic stroke that changed her life, taking away her independence and her ability to read. A devastating loss, being the avid reader and scholar she was (A+, A+, A+). She rose above the obstacles she faced, embracing a greater appreciation for being in the moment, the birds singing, the colours of the sky, new craft pursuits (weaving, painting, creating beautiful suncatchers), and most importantly rock collecting.
To our family, Mom was our ROCK and our GO TO PERSON, offering unconditional love and never-ending support. “You fought the fight, won the race, good and faithful servant”
Rest easy, Mom, until we dance together again.
Memorial Service at Christ Anglican Church, 231 Sixth Ave., Lively on Monday, September 30, 2024, at 2pm. Friends may call after 1:30pm Monday at the church. Cremation with interment in the family plot at the Waters Cemetery.
Followed by a “Celebration of Life “, at the Walden Library / Seniors Complex – Kinsmen Hall – 3:30 pm – Light lunch will be served.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice, Christ Anglican Church or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
