With broken hearts we announce the passing of Gerald and Joan Collins. They passed away, only days apart, surrounded by their family. They shared a bond like no other, their affection, commitment, and support of each other over the years is a true love story.
One of 12 siblings Gerald, 96, passed away unexpectedly at home “on the hill”, Mayfield Road, Antigonish on Saturday, July 27th, 2024. Gerald was born on September 13, 1927, in St. Anne’s, Newfoundland and lived most of his life, in Mulgrave. His parents were James and Bridget. Seeking adventure, he left home early in life and worked at sea for many years before coming ashore. He married Joan Duff on November 30, 1957, daughter of Colin and Catherine Duff and started a new chapter that lasted the rest of his life.
He was a gentle soul and will be remembered for his love of family, fishing, boat making, cards, and story telling. For many years Lake Ainslie was his second home where he created many great memories and friendships. Dad’s sense of humour, quick whit and satire left others in fits of laughter. He loved indulging in baked goods, or anything to satisfy his sweet tooth. Dad rarely had an idle moment, always tinkering with something from making puzzles, wood burning, or his talented craftsmanship with ships in a bottle, light houses, sail boats, riggers, knot boards, or other nautical pieces.
In the midst of all of his activities, he found time to be a great husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Dad was a quiet man and his love shone brilliantly in his actions.
One of 10 siblings which includes her 4 stepsisters in British Colombia Joan, 85, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, after many months fighting cancer. Joan was born on August 18, 1938, in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years but kept her days busy with giving back to her community. She also worked for many years at the Cove Motel.
Mom was especially proud of her family. She was happiest when she was surrounded by them enjoying a cup of tea in hand. She would beam as she spoke about her children and their accomplishments. She thoroughly enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great grand children. She loved them with all her heart. Mom could make a meal out of nothing, and you never left home feeling hungry.
Time just seemed to pass ever so quickly in her presence. She was a friend to all she met. She had a way of quickly putting everyone at ease with her nonjudgmental friendly nature, and her kind welcoming demeanor. She was a ray of light that shone brightly on anyone that had the pleasure to know her!
Mom & Dad built a beautiful life together for over 68 years. Deeply respected and admired by many, their love for one another and for their family was unsurpassed. The family home was often full and served as a gathering place on many occasions throughout their lifetimes. Fond memories will live on in all those who had the privilege to be in their company
They will be greatly missed by their 7 remaining children (Kenneth, Blaise, Cathy, Trish, Joanie, James and John. They are predeceased by their son Gerald and grandson Thomas. Joan and Gerald have 25 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Mom and Dad lived a great life and are a true example of maximizing your time on earth. We are so proud of them and the examples they set of taking initiative, pursuing your interests, giving to your community, showing kindness, humility, and quietly caring for those you love.
We are thankful for the wonderful care and support dad and mom received from Amy Collins, St Martha’s Hospital, Dr. Gallivan and Dr. Rice and the entire palliative care team at St Martha’s Hospital.
Funeral mass will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 6 at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Mulgrave with Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial to follow in the St. Lawrence Parish Cemetery, Mulgrave. There will be a reception to follow at Mulgrave Fire Hall. Donations in memory of Joan & Gerald may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
