George Wilbert WOOD, at Northumberland Hills Hospital, attended by loving wife Bonnie Wood.
George (born May 4, 1937; died April 22, 2024) lived a life full of music. Music was constant in his life: from the sound of his father’s fiddle at the family farm in South Monaghan, to playing in a family band, to singing in church choirs starting from age 12 up until only a few years ago. He played many instruments, and over the course of his life, sang in barbershop quartets, the Liftlock City chorus, and Northumberland Choir. He also sang in musicals, at weddings and spread the joy of music to others by playing in nursing homes and at community gatherings. After his retirement, George played in bands, loved to play music with friends, and listened to music of all kinds – from opera to bluegrass.
George spent many years working in telephone communications, from Barry’s Bay to Thamesville, finally arriving at Port Hope Telephone (prior to its absorption into Bell Canada). George enjoyed his work around the country and even met wife Nancy during a service call to the Banister farm at Campbellcroft. The work was hard on his body, but he was always engaged and interested. Many around Northumberland and Durham counties met George as “the telephone man” and he readily made friends far and wide.
George was an active member of the Garden Hill United Church for many years. In more recent times, he enjoyed fellowship at Kendal United Church and Grace Church, Port Hope. The kindness and support of his church community was important to him and he loved his church friends old and new.
Family, nature, farming and history all were of interest to George. Besides music, George will be remembered for his kindness and consideration for others, his goodwill towards everyone and his humour. Despite decades of health challenges, he worked diligently to improve his well-being and mobility.
We loved him very much and we will miss him.
George is survived by his wife Bonnie (nee Burley), his children Michael, Gregory (Shannon Draper) and Andrea. Much loved and proud grandfather of Greg’s three boys, Patrick, Charlie and James of Ottawa. Also survived by brother-in-law Richard “Dick” Jennings and three generations of nieces and nephews.
George is predeceased by wife Nancy (Banister) Wood, parents James and Jean Wood, siblings James Wood (Patricia) and Marguerite (Wood) Jennings, in addition to parents-in-law Weston and Bernice Banister.
George was a supporter of Operation Smile. His family asks that you carry George’s spirit and voice into the world by gathering for music or by engaging in acts of kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held on George’s 87th birthday, Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 1:30pm, Grace Church, 2 Centennial Drive, Port Hope. Come and join us in song as we celebrate George’s going home.
