After 95 years of richly rewarding experiences, George Shand Gall passed away on July 20th, 2024. George was born on January 5th, 1929, to Irene (nee Lypps) and John Gall, in Windsor, Ontario. He was predeceased by sisters Anne (Don) Caldwell and Mary (Joe) Gwinn. George is survived by his brother and partner in crime, Donald Gall, Donald’s wife Jane, nieces and nephews, and their families. After more than 70 years of marriage, George was predeceased by his gracious wife, Barbara Anne (nee Harvie), in March of 2024. Barbara and George shared fond memories of their earlier friendship at Dougall Avenue School, Patterson Collegiate, and London Normal School. George and Barbara were deeply saddened by the death of their youngest daughter, Mary Catherine Wilkinson, in 2021. After graduating from Normal School, George enjoyed 12 years as a classroom and music teacher in several Windsor public schools. A group of his former students has kept in touch for more than 60 years. George then assumed an administrative role with the Windsor Board of Education, as an area superintendent. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1984. In 1985, George was surprised and gratified to receive the Fred Bartlett Award, presented annually to Ontario’s outstanding supervisory officer. This honour was in recognition of George’s leadership as chairman of the team that developed the Race Relations policy for the Windsor Board of Education. George was of the first generation for whom retirement was perceived as an opportunity to pursue new endeavours. George was a long-time member of the All Saints church choir, beginning, as a boy soprano, in the 1930’s. Upon retirement, he was able to pursue his interest in choral music, as a member of the Windsor Classic Chorale and the Windsor Symphony Chorus, where he reestablished old friendships and forged new ones. Restoring and maintaining his hundred year old home on Devonshire Road was a labour of love. His home’s extraordinary curb appeal was a reflection of George’s diligent care. George is lovingly remembered by his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law George Hart, daughter Janet and son-in-law Don Thorpe, and son-in-law Mark Wilkinson. Unabashedly proud Grandpa and Grandpa-in-law to Jane and Frank, Julia and Matt, Dan and Emily, Thomas and Jess W., and Alex and Jess L. Delighted to be the Great-Grandpa of Elise, Mary-Joy, Maya, Frankie and Laura. It is with sincere gratitude that we extend thanks to the staff at Amica Riverside for their nearly seven years of care, compassion and camaraderie. The family invites you to join us for a Celebration of George’s Life, on August 21st, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Families First, 3260 Dougall Avenue, South Windsor, Tel. 519 969 5841.
