George Phillip Feit, known to all as Phil, passed away on September 16, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on February 17, 1940, in Thorburn, Nova Scotia, Phil lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and love, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Phil was the cherished husband of Joan (née Roode), whom he married on July 17, 1965. Together, they built a life rich with experiences and memories. Phil is survived by his sisters Shirley and Emily, his sons Trevor (married to Paew) and Jason (married to Barbara), and his grandchildren Amanda, Samantha, Logan, and Zachary. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren Noah, Lucas, Khloe, and Sophia. He was predeceased by his brother Fred and his grandson James.
Born to loving parents Catherine and Karl (Charlie) Feit, Phil grew up in Thorburn where he learned the importance of kindness, hard work and family. At 18, he joined the Navy, sailed to several Caribbean countries and was one of the members chosen to serve in the Honour Guard Queen for Elizabeth’s 1959 official visit to Canada. Earning such a prestigious opportunity was far from easy and while many tried, few were successful.
In his early years, Phil worked as a ranch hand in Lundbreck, Alberta, and continued farm work in Nova Scotia. He eventually transitioned to long-haul transport, a field where he made a significant mark. An entrepreneur at heart, Phil first owned a successful trucking company and then founded GPF Contracting, a tree removal business. Later in life, he passed the business on to his son Trevor. Not one to sit idle in his retirement years, Phil continued to assist with the business while also driving rigs across Canada and the US as a broker.
A longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Phil was known for his infectious sense of humour and his ability to make friends wherever he went. He loved sharing stories, and his vibrant personality made him a favorite among those he met. His many road trips across North America were a testament to his adventurous spirit. In retirement, Phil and Joan enjoyed winters in Florida and Arizona, where they made countless new friends and enjoyed the sunshine.
Phil had a deep love for the ocean and found great joy in spending time at the family property near Egerton, where they had recently built a home. He never tired of the stunning view of Merigomish Harbour, which brought him much peace and happiness.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Palliative Care Society and the Victorian Order of Nurses for their compassionate care. A memorial service to celebrate Phil’s remarkable life will be held on Thursday, September 19th at 11 am at the MacPherson’s Mills Cemetery followed by a reception at the Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MacPherson’s Mills Improvement Society or the Canadian Cancer Society, reflecting Phil’s generous spirit.
Phil’s warmth, humor, and adventurous spirit will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will continue to bring joy and inspiration to those he touched. Hudson Masonic Lodge will conduct their service following the graveside service on Thursday.
