We the family, are deeply saddened to announce the passing of George Dicks, a caring, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, on Monday December 4, 2023 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney on March 19, 1936, to Cyril and Phyllis (Strickland) Dicks. George is survived by the love of his life Pauline (Strickland) Dicks recently celebrating 68 years of marriage. Also left to mourn are his sons Cyril (Corena) Dicks, Georges River, Kenny (Denise) Dicks, Sydney, his daughter Wendy (Lowell) Macdonald, Boularderie, and daughter-in-law Janet Dicks, Georges River. He leaves behind his loving grandchildren Jodie Lynn (Tyler) Fletcher, Calgary, Michelle (Nick) Jessome, Bible Hill, Jaclyn Dicks, North Sydney, Tara (Brian) Byrne, Boularderie, Matt (Chelsey) Macdonald, Fort McMurray, Natalie Dicks, Sydney and Jenna Rasmussen, Sydney Mines. He will also be missed by his great-grandchildren Owen, Nathan, Eloise, Drake, Cash, Axl, Noah, and Trinity. George is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Barb Strickland and Bess Atkinson, Ontario along with numerous nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his parents Cyril and Phyllis (Strickland) Dicks, his son Greg and grandson Michael Dicks, his sister Estella and brother-in-law Dennis Fernyhough, mother-in-law Lillian (Stagg) Strickland, sister-in-law, Marie Watts, brother-in-law Brent Strickland.
George spent 40 years working as a stevedore for Marine Atlantic until he retired at 57. He also was a lobster fisherman, something he loved and continued to do into his early 80s. He was a true hobbyist and boat builder. He collected and restored old engines, he loved his make and brakes. He loved to drive around the island never knowing what he might find or who he may get to chat to. He loved his summer home, “The Lazy D” in New Campbellton. He would hike the woods for that perfect branch for making his famous canes. He loved to beach comb and always came back with something he found interesting.
George was one of a kind. He was loved by all who knew him. He was hardworking, honest, kind, loving and a true gentleman who loved his family dearly. He is and always will be forever loved and missed by all who he leaves behind.
We want to thank Dr. Poulos, Dr. Ritter and all who cared for George.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2023 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, King Street, North Sydney, with Rev. Debbie Fice officiating and under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney
