Geddes Chimming: November 6 1939 – July 6 2024
Geddes was the third child born to Vivian and Alvin, in Port of Spain, Trinidad. With eight sisters and brothers, there was always mischief for him to get into. He has often recounted the story of jumping onto a racehorse bareback without knowing how to ride. Aside from falling off horses, his many pastimes, over the years, have included: playing mas; photography; keeping fish; tinkering with electronics; and frustrating his father by trying to learn to play steel pan.
In his early 20s, Geddes married his sweetheart Shirley. They had two children, Anthony and Sharon. Geddes moved to Canada in his early 30s, yet Trinidad was always «home» in his heart. His annual Carnival jump up in Trinidad became an annual Caribana jump up in Toronto, and he sometimes hopped onto his motorcycle to drive to Montreal and St. Catharines to jump up again! After Shirley passed, at an unexpectedly young age, Geddes made a home with Hyacinth, who has since preceded him.
At 60 years of age, Geddes was diagnosed with a rare and highly inheritable neurological disorder. At that time, he was found to already have over 100 tumors throughout his brain as well as significant hemorrhage. The tumors multiplied, some expanded in size, and many continued to hemorrhage leading to progressing challenges. Geddes was a strong fighter and he regained lost skills many times, only to lose them again and start over. Nevertheless, he squeezed as much out of life as he could. He held onto his independence as long as possible. He continued to raise fish and flowers, to make and entertain friends, to help neighbours fix their TVs, and to shop at flea markets. After moving to Taunton Mills long term care home, in 2014, he participated in arts, exercise, entertainment and religious activities. There he met Ellie who became his constant companion. He was greatly saddened when Ellie passed over, and he followed closely behind her three months later.
In his last days, Geddes was kept comfortable by the dedicated and caring staff at Taunton Mills to whom his family is deeply grateful. Listening to hymns and prayers with his children and with chaplain Rob, Geddes prepared for his journey, to the other side, with God on his mind. In the early morning, on July 6, he crossed over to join Vivian and Alvin, siblings (Rosemarie, Pamela, Francis, Stanley, William, Joan, Yvonne), Shirley, Hyacinth, Ellie, and his Heavenly Father. He is survived by his children, his sister Glenda, and his nieces and nephews in the US and Trinidad.
A funeral service will be held on Friday August 9, 2:00pm, in the chapel (retirement residence entrance) at The Village of Taunton Mills Retirement Home, 3800 Brock St. N., in Whitby. Light refreshments will follow from 2:30pm-4:00pm. If you plan to attend the funeral services or the gathering afterwards, please contact geddesfuneralattendance@yahoo.com with number of people attending.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to may donate in Geddes’ memory to Tropicana Community Services or to the Brain Injury Association of Durham.
