It is with great sadness that the family of Gary Weir announce his passing on Thursday March 2, 2023, at the Chatham-Kent Hospice at the age of 86 years. Son of the late Robert and Gertrude (Jennings) Weir. Beloved husband and best friend of Elaine (Oliver) with whom he shared 62 years of married life. Loving father of Patti and husband John Rossi of LaSalle, Rob and wife Shirley Thomas-Weir of Burlington, and Cheryl and husband Don Newbury of Chatham. Much adored Papa of Clayton and Aisha Weir, Erica and Julia Rossi, and Kate and Nicole Newbury. Dear brother of Nancy Kunsch (Bill) of Windsor. Gary grew up in Windsor and attended Patterson Collegiate where he was an outstanding athlete. Following high school, he played baseball in the Georgia Peach League. He then graduated from Assumption University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and spent his career in Human Resources, retiring from Union Gas in 1996. Gary was a community-minded citizen and gave freely of his time to Junior Achievement, the Emma Street Family Health Team, the Police Services Board, the local Conservative party, and Holy Trinity Church. In 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for community service.
Gary enjoyed meeting people and always took the time to learn something about everyone he met. He regularly kept in touch with friends and will be greatly missed by his telephone buddies.
Above all, Gary loved and supported his family – travelling up and down the 401 to attend events in which his grandchildren were participating. The roles of husband, father and papa were ones he loved most, and we are all richer for his guidance and support.
Thank you to Dr. Matsusaki and staff, Dr. Cervi of the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, the staff at CKHA Ambulatory Care and Emergency, and CK Hospice who took such good care of him during his illness and final days.
At Gary’s request there will be a private family service celebrating his life. Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider Holy Trinity/St. Paul’s Anglican Church or the Chatham-Kent Hospice. Online condolences may be left at www.alexanderhoulefuneralhome.ca.
