Gary Lee Ellenton
May 2, 1933 – September 5, 2024
Gary leaves to mourn Louise, his wife and partner of 67 years, sons Anthony, Jeffrey (Michelle) and Christopher. He was predeceased by daughter Cindy in 2004. Seven grandchildren, Casey Haxton (James), Alex Ellenton, Lisa Calkins (Dale), Shawna Clark (William), Curtis Ellenton, Adrian Ellenton, Damon Ellenton, and three great grandchildren, Hayden Haxton, and Q;uincy and Otis Clark. He was predeceased by one brother, Earl Kaye and his parents, James Earl and Sarah Ellen.
Gary was born, raised and graduated from high school in Nanton, Alberta. His school years were filled with activities, hockey in winter, baseball, and every sport that was available. He made lifelong friends.
He started his plumbing apprenticeship even before finishing school, working for the local pl;umber during the summers. He continued with him after graduation, but lack of work in Nanton in 1953 precipated a move to Calgary to work for McQuiston Plumbing. It seems Gay’s motto was «Work hard, play hard» for he continued to advance in his chosen career, play hockey in the Big Six Leag;ue for Nanton Palominos, then the CPR Beavers and persue his other love, fly fishing.
In 1969 Gary and Louise purchased the company, McQuiston Plumbing and Heating Ltd. They continued to operate it until 1998 when it was split and sold to sons Jeff and Chris.
Gary was an active member of the Mechanical Contractors of Calgary, MCA Alberta, and MCA Canada. He served for many year on th board of directors in all positions including president of MCA Calgary and MCA Alberta and was National Vice Presedent when he retired. Gary also served the Mechanical Contractors Assn as a trustee on the Local 496 Health and Welfare and Pension Plans – a position he held for 25 years. The MCA showed their appreciation for his many years of service by naming an apprentice scholarship in his honor.
In 1972 they purchased property in Canmore, four lots on the river. By this time Gary was on the Ski Patrol at Sunshine and the family was spending their weekends skiing. He started building their Canmore home in 1975. It was a labor of love for he did much of the work himself. They moved in New Years Eve 1979, celebrating with a new year’s party – the first of many.
In Canmore Gary served in many Volunteer capacities. He was the driver for the Japanese team during the 1988 Olmpics, he was known then as Gary San. He served on the board of the Canmore Golf Club including president in 1995, and the House and Grounds chairman of the Canmore Seniors Assn where some of his time was spent building the raised flower boxes and bences in the back yard. For several years he Ski-Hosted at Norquay.
After retiring in 1998, although he kept golfing, hiking, skiing and curling, he wanted to satisfy a desire he had to fly fish in some distant waters. He visited New Zealand and enjoyed it but a friend suggested he try the Patagonia region of Chile. At that time the Aysen region was unspoiled, beautiful, and the fish were plentiful. He loved Chile and the people. He organized fly fishing trips for several years, then bought land and built a home there. From 2004 to 2019 Gary and Louise emersed themselves in the Chilean culture as well as hosting many friends from Canada, during the months of November to April.
Another dream of Gary’s was to have a ranch in Longview. Reality pared this down to a house on a large lot he purchased in 2009 and immediately started adding to it. Gary has only been in heaven for a few days but it is likely that he is already looking for a project he can start working on.
