In Celebration of
Garfield Wesley Shaw
December 1, 1943 –
September 3, 2024
Gar passed peacefully at home on September 3, 2024. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Angela (Campbell) and sons Geoffrey (Jennalee), Paul (Valerie) and Cory (Alisha). He adored his grandsons Oliver and James. Time spent with them was all too short.
The family are grateful to the Mississauga Halton LHIN for enabling quality care from both Spectrum Health, Acclaim Health and the Palliative Care Team at the Credit Valley Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Patel, RN Avenpreet and PSW’s Ash, Kamaria, Natalia, Joyce and Maria.
Gar was born in Toronto on December 1, 1943. He was predeceased by his parents Ruth and Wes as well has his brothers Dennis and Larry. Fondly remembered by sisters-in-law Noeleen and Kathy and many nieces and nephews.
Gar was educated in Toronto and Etobicoke, graduated from Ryerson (RTA 1966) and worked in various radio stations in Kitchener, Oshawa and Toronto. He was the News Director at CJRT FM until his move to the Ontario Government in 1973 where he remained until his retirement in 1999.
His passions were family history and the history of old towns in Ontario. A consummate researcher and writer he coauthored the Pictorial History of the Town of Bowmanville “Picture The Way We Were” (1980). All his research has been donated to the Bowmanville Museum and is known as the Garfield Shaw Collection. In 2013 he received a Certificate of Merit from the Ontario Heritage Trust in appreciation of his volunteer work to identify, preserve, protect and promote our provinces rich heritage. Gar was a faithful volunteer for many years in the “Book Room” preparing for the Annual Book Sale in support of the Mississauga Symphony.
Gar had many personal interests including his love for the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs. Gar was also an avid fan of music, especially Jazz. Gar enjoyed searching and collecting antiques and collectibles including post cards, stamps, coins, sports cards and all things with historical and nostalgic reference.
