Frederick ‘Fred’ Charlton
1943-2024
Charles Frederick «Fred» Charlton, 80, passed away
peacefully on March 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and the
incredible staff of Whispering Tides, Glen Haven
Manor.
He was born on June 8, 1943, to Henry and Margaret (Gerrior)
Charlton and grew up in Trenton, NS.
In his early years, Fred joined the Navy and spent 9 years of
dedicated service before his growing family needed him at home. It was
then, that he began in the Electrical trade and worked successfully
for his journeyman designation. He owned and operated his side
business called F&S Electric, wiring and re-wiring homes
across Pictou County. He spent most of his working career as the
Superintendent of Maintenance for Hawker Siddeley Canada, and later
Trenton Works Lavalin Inc., and finally Trenton Works Ltd
(Greenbrier). There would not be an employee who worked in the busy
plant that did not know or respect Fred. He was a former town
councillor for the Town of Trenton and sat on various government
boards over the years.
He loved the outdoors and had a strong passion for hunting
and fishing. You could find him on Weaver’s Mountain during
hunting season with his boys, and his older brother Billy. You could
also find him at Tim Horton’s in Trenton, showing off his
catch of four and five-pound Sea Trout to the local crew during the
spring run.
At the young age of 57, Fred and Sharon decided he should
retire and focused their attention on travel to many incredible
destinations abroad. This move also allowed him to
concentrate on his favorite job…being
«Pupo». Now if you have ever driven up
Duke Street and passed the big house on the left halfway
up…you likely witnessed him in some form playing endlessly
outside with his grand kids. From Disney World to custom tree forts,
sledding on the hill and tractor rides, zip lining and Tim’s
drives combined with regular weekly sleepovers, these were all topped
off with Nan and Pupo couch snuggles, and movie time curled up in the
living room with all his kiddies…and a smile you could
never forget spread across his face.
He was an incredibly hard-working man, a dedicated provider
and mentor that never stopped supporting his children, family, and
neighbors in any capacity when called upon. The «Hill» has
certainly lost one of the great ones.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sharon (Rundle); his
children, Cathy (Jamie) Foote, French River, Angela, Halifax, Fred
Jr., Trenton, Scott, Ontario, John (Emily) Little Harbour, NS;
stepchildren, Scott MacDonald (Sylvie), Karen MacDonald (Burnie);
grandchildren, Jamie Lee, Carly, Dylan, Hanna, Alicia, Ashley,
Jessica, Cassidy, Kory, Norman, Nick, Bryanna and Evan, Grace, Lauren
and Janelle and Thai; numerous great-grandchildren and his brothers,
Cecil (Nancy), Pictou landing and George (Marion), Stellarton. Fred
also leaves behind his forever loved cockapoo, Zoe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Margaret,
his first wife, Mary Ann (Maclean), siblings, Billy, Marjorie,
numerous aunts, uncles, and relatives.
There will be no visitation and a private celebration of life
will take place at a later date. In memory of Fred, please consider
donating to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova
Scotia.
«The
trail is the thing, not the end of the trail. Travel too fast, and you
miss all that you are traveling
for.» ……Louis
L’Amour
