Fred Churchill Obituary
Fred Churchill – Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, August 30th, in the presence of his loving family at the age of 80. Waiting to meet and greet Fred in heaven is his infant grandson, Jack Aaron, who passed away at birth. Jack will be united with his poppy at last. Fred is predeceased by his parents Frank and Lucy Churchill; parents-in-law Fred and Irene Mills; brothers Alan (Pat), Frank (Shirley), Robert (Eleanor), Alex; sisters Marion (Hayward), Lorraine, brothers-in-law Gilbert (Mary), Fred (Gerri), and sister-in-law Shirley (Leo); beloved pups Chrissy, Buddy, Ned, and Joey.
Leaving to mourn is the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Dianne (Mills) Churchill; sons Craig and daughter-in-law Carole, Darren and daughter-in-law Nancy; Fred’s pride and joy, his granddaughters Lia and Laura; brother Wince and sister-in-law Russie; brother-in-law Bill Thomson; sister-in-law Alice Churchill; best buddy John Walsh, and beagle pal Diego. He will be remembered lovingly by a large circle of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, family, friends, and special neighbours.
Fred embodied kindness, compassion and love. He was a friend to all, and helped anyone in need, no task too big or too small. He could “turn his hand to anything”, and the outcome would be as good as any professional job. Gardening was a passion of his and he found joy in creating beautiful spaces for his family to enjoy. As a hockey and soccer coach to the youth in Mount Pearl in the 80’s, Fred helped develop a passion for sports and camaraderie amongst his teams. His leadership inspired many of those young people into their adult lives. We’ve often been told what a great coach he was! Craig and Darren benefitted from his guidance most of all.
Fred was a loving father who always supported and admired his sons’ endeavours. He was proud of Craig as he dedicated his career to serve and protect in the Canadian Armed Forces, now a retired Veteran. He was also proud of Darren’s musical career playing in the bands CRISIS and Young Saints, and later his broadcasting career with CBC and the House of Assembly of Newfoundland. He enjoyed spending quality time with Craig helping him with any project he was working on. Fred enjoyed watching hockey with Darren, yelling happily—and sometimes not—at the TV for whatever play the Ottawa Senators had made or missed.
Fred had a youthful spirit and a real zest for life! It was obvious to those who were close to him that Fred would go when he was ready and not a minute before. Fred left many doctors feeling amazed that he beat the odds that had been served to him many times over the last 27 years because he simply was not done living yet.
As a young man Fred loved to dance, and could jive like no one else, winning many dance competitions around St. John’s. He also enjoyed fishing at Middle Gull Pond and Salmonier Line with family.
The last 19 years of his life was filled with the joy of being a grandfather to Lia and Laura. Together with Dianne he managed, “camp nanny and poppy,” as they cared for the girls while Darren and Nancy worked. Lia and Laura absorbed every ounce of poppy’s playful demeanour. He filled their imaginations with possibility and encouraged them to try everything they thought they were afraid of. His creative nature born endless stories he told aloud. He spent countless hours in the summer time in the back yard, and pool side, while they played. He was so very proud of the girls’ musical talents and he was most happy when he saw them perform on stage in front of an audience or private concerts performed at home in the living room. Lia and Laura truly were blessed to have had Fred’s love and influence in their lives.
Dogs held a special place in Fred’s heart and he loved every unique quality in each one of them. He would be thrilled to know that his pacemaker will be donated to a dog in need, so they may experience life on earth a little while longer.
Our family would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to every person who helped care for Fred over the years—there were many!
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fred’s memory to Kids Eat Smart foundation, or to your local food bank.

There was a lot of borrowed time and he lived all of it as fully as he could!
