Fraser Campbell
1942-2023
Fraser Campbell of Caribou Island and Falmouth, NS died
peacefully September 26, 2023 at Valley Hospice, with family at his
side.
Fraser was born to Minnie Alice (Fraser) (Campbell) Tupper on
February 22, 1942. He grew up in Pictou Landing and Trenton
NS. He was predeceased by his mother, Minnie Alice Tupper,
step-father Lloyd Douglas Tupper, and half-brother Lloyd Michael
Tupper.
He is survived by his wife Susan Spence-Campbell, his
children Gordon Campbell, Masstown, Graeme Campbell (Melissa James),
Halifax and Ellen Warren (Stephen), Debert, and his
children’s mother, Janet Maybee, Masstown; step-children
Rachel Goldie (Thomas), Brussels BE, Julia Hardwick (Phillip), London
UK, and John Campbell (Katie Nodding), Windsor NS;
grandchildren Maggie and Fraser Warren, stepgrandchildren,
Genevieve, Lucas, and Rian Goldie, and Isabelle Hardwick; half-brother
Paul Tupper, New Glasgow; uncle James Lesley Powell Fraser (Yvonne)
Thunder Bay ON and numerous cousins.
Fraser was a teacher, a poet, a sailor and a
musician. He loved the theatre. He had a curious mind and
was an early adopter of new technology over the decades. At
CEC, in Truro, where he taught English, he both directed and produced
musicals, as well as designing sets and lighting for over 30
years. He took pride in his appearance, winning the Best
Dressed Teacher award. A white shirt and a nice tie was his MO. He
wrote poetry most of his life, publishing in his twenties in
Prism. He captured the essence of his topics with carefully
chosen words and rhythm. He loved to sail. He owned a few boats over
his lifetime but his favourite was the last, a C&C 25,
Naiad. He and Susan sailed the Northumberland Strait, but he
especially loved to race on Wednesday nights with his brother-in-law
Dave Penney or friend Mike Bishop. He was a trumpet player until he
attended university and resumed playing after 40 years of
quiet.
He joined several bands in the Windsor area and ended his
trumpet playing days with The New Horizons band. Skiing in the winter
and sailing in the summer, Fraser and Susan wintered in Falmouth and
summered on Caribou Island on the land which his great-great
grandmother received a land grant for. His children spent
every summer there, swimming, playing on the beach, building drip
castles, collecting sea shells, even building a Huckleberry Finn raft
to paddle out to the reefs. All the grandchildren got to
enjoy the beach and the pleasures it brings. For twenty
years, Fraser and Susan hosted an annual Fraser family picnic so the
cousins could enjoy each other’s company, rather than only
meeting at funerals. The coveted Washer Toss trophy is cherished by
all who won it. The garden Fraser carefully tended produced
enough vegetables to supply the table for a year. Fraser
planted, Susan harvested and processed. Fraser took great joy in
sharing his love of stories, rhymes, theatre and puzzles with his
children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed when advice or a
helping in hand is needed for fixing a roof, solving a crossword clue,
or finishing the Rubik’s cube. His kind heart and care for
his family was felt by all in our visits in his final
days.
The family is forever grateful to the palliative care teams
at the VG and Valley Hospice for their exceptional care and
comfort.
Two celebrations of life will be held, the first at the
Windsor Curling Club on October 14 at 2PM, a video link will be
available (www.eastcoastmemorial.ca).
The second will take place at R.H. Porter Funeral Home,
55 Almont Avenue, New Glasgow on Thursday Oct 19, at 12
pm.
If you would like to honour Fraser’s memory,
consider supporting the local arts scene. Go to a play, take
in a concert, buy a piece of art, a book or a CD and think of
him.
