Frank Durnford Dominie Obituary
Frank Durnford Dominie passed peacefully away November 5, 2024 with his family by his side. He was 88 years old.
Frank was born September 12, 1936 in Cape La Hune, Newfoundland. His family moved to Port Aux Basques when he was 12. He finished school and attended Memorial University of Newfoundland where he earned his Bachelor of Education degree. Frank began his teaching career in Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island where he met his future wife Honor Rogers. Frank’s teaching career led the family to Isle Aux Morts, Mouse Island (Port Aux Basques), Trinity (Bonavista Bay), and finally to Botwood for the last 21 years of his 32 year career as an English teacher. Frank spent much of his adult life serving the Anglican Church in many capacities. He was a licensed lay minister and lay Eucharist minister for 60 years as well as serving as a Church Warden at St. James Anglican Church in Botwood. Frank was the Diocesan Chair for the Primate World Relief and Development Fund and spent three years on the National Committee. The time spent working with the PWRDF enabled Frank and Honor to travel around Canada and to Tanzania. Next to serving the Church, Frank’s passion was serving his community through the Lions Club. He was a member of the Botwood Lions Club for 50 years. During this time he served as District Governor from 2004-05, was honoured with the Melvin Jones Fellowship, and most recently a lifetime membership. Frank’s service was not limited to his Church and the Lions Club. For all of the years he lived there, the Town of Botwood benefited from his love of his community. Over the years he volunteered at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Centre, was a member of the 50 Plus Club, was a founding member of the Botwood Mural Arts Society and served for 10 years. Frank’s volunteer service did not go unnoticed as he was recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and named Town of Botwood Volunteer of the Year in 2012. When Frank and Honor retired they kept busy with their volunteer activities but also took time to enjoy life. They traveled to visit family and friends and discovered the joy of cruising. Frank spent a lot of time in his basement workshop building toys for his grandchildren. He found so much joy in building things for friends and family. Frank was an avid reader and wore out his library card discovering many genres of literature.
Frank is survived by his wife of 64 years Honor, sons Brian (Denise), Keith (Wilma), and Andrew (Teresa). Also left with many precious memories are grandchildren Allison (Paul) Smale, Sarah (Claire Przekop) Dominie, and Jeremy (Sarah Peters) Dominie, great-granddaughter Emery Smale, brother Wayne (Marilyn), brother-in-law Ralph (Nita) Rogers, sister-in-law Dorothy Parsons, and a very large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Norman and Sarah Dominie, brother George, sisters Norma Dutot and Alice Bungay, sister-in-law Annie Dominie, brother-in-law Maxwell Dutot, father-in-law and mother-in-law Ronald and Tryphena Rogers. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and care teams at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, GFW and The Lionel Kelland Hospice, as well as the caring staff at Holletts Park Living.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Frank’s memory to The Primates World Relief and Development Fund. pwrdf.org or St. James Anglican Church, Botwood. (botwoodanglican@gmail.com)
