Our dear father passed away at the age of 98 at Kensington Hospice with his family by his side, August 22, 2023 in Toronto, Canada.
The youngest of a large family, Francesco was born in Bari, Italy on January 15, 1925 to Lorenzo Dragonieri and Rosa Patruno. From his early teens he worked hard in his family’s foundry. Then in his early twenties he dealt with the painful death of his parents. In 1948 he married a beautiful, artistic, young woman Giovanna Buonpensiero with whom he had two sons, Lorenzo and Teodoro. Due to difficult financial times in post-war Italy, he worked for five years in Germany using his skills as a form maker and a machinist.
In 1966 he brought his family to Toronto, Canada and started a new life with the assistance and support of a few settled family members. He soon found a job with a Canadian company called Supreme Aluminium and in a few years saved enough to purchase a house in Toronto. There are many fond memories of a full house with extended family members during the holidays and other family gatherings filled with music, great food, and wine.
He was a dedicated gardener and enjoyed growing a variety of vegetables that he loved sharing with family and friends. He loved raising a plethora of birds and caring for stray budgies and injured birds that would land in his garden. He enjoyed barbequing and assisting his wife Giovanna in creating sumptuous meals for Sunday lunches.
He loved to sing and, when the right occasion arose, he was the life of the party! He enjoyed good food, a cold brew, and the presence of his family. He was an avid soccer fan and his grandsons can attest to his fanaticism with the sport, especially during the World Cup. He enjoyed a long, productive and satisfying life.
He is survived by his sons, Lorenzo and Teodoro with his wife Esther, his grandson Marcel and his wife Katy and great grandchild Mateo, and grandsons Amedeo, Leo and Mauro.
May the presence of the Lord comfort his soul and that of the ones he leaves behind.
Visitations will take place at the DeMarco Funeral Home (Woodbridge Chapel) (tel-905-850-9500) (8003 Weston Road, Woodbridge, Ontario, L4L 0K6) on Sunday August 27th, 2023 from 2-4 & 6-8p.m.. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday August 28th, 2023 at 10a.m. with entombment to follow at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery (7300 Highway 27, Woodbridge, On.).
