It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ferdinand (Ferdi) Alois Zumbuhl on October 24, 2024, at the age of 80. Ferdi was a beloved husband, stepdad, grandpa, brother, and friend. Ferdi will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Ferdi passed away
peacefully with family by his side at the Sagewood Continuing Care Facility.
Ferdi was born on February 13, 1944, in Stans, Switzerland. He grew up in Stans, where he developed a love for farming and caring for animals. He immigrated to Canada on June 17, 1974, at the age of 30.
Ferdi, along with his brother Walter, purchased a farm together west of Balzac in 1975. They named their farm Siva Farm as it was located in Symons Valley. They worked very hard raising pigs, cattle, chickens, and horses. Walter moved back to Switzerland in 1986.
Ferdi and Vreny got married on August 6, 1988, where he took on the role of both husband to Vreny and stepdad to Carita and Natasha. Having three women move in with the bachelor was quite the adjustment, as you can imagine, but he welcomed all of us with open arms and showed nothing but love, care, and was always willing to help out whenever we needed a handyman. Ferdi was always willing to lend the neighbouring farmers a hand, whether it was to help with calving, doctoring animals or fixing machinery. He spent many hours around the kitchen table drinking coffee and sharing stories.
Ferdi and Vreny continued to farm on Siva Farm together until they moved to a smaller farm in Irricana in 2005. Living on the farm in Irricana, Ferdi was able to continue to raise cattle and laying hens, which he always enjoyed. When Ferdi wasn’t working with the animals, he could be found trimming trees and making firewood for their wood fireplace.
Ferdi was so proud of his six grandchildren, and they have such fond memories of him making big piles of leaves just so they could jump in them, collecting eggs, feeding cattle, and making hay. The grandchildren loved getting rides on the bobcat and the ride-on mower
with him. His love of farming was fondly shared with his grandchildren.
Ferdi is survived by his loving and caring wife Vreny; stepdaughter Carita (Trevor) with grandchildren Brendan, Chalissa, Annika; his stepdaughter Natasha (Ian) with grandchildren Thea, Griffin, and Sienna; his brother Walter (Brigitte), Klaus (Cecile), and sister Antoinette.
He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and extended family whom he cared for deeply. He is predeceased by his father Gottfried, his mother Elisabeth, and brothers Gottfried (Christa) and Peter (Roshilde).
The family would like to thank the many friends and relatives who have offered condolences and support, including the staff at the Sagewood Continuing Care Facility and Wheatland Funeral Home.
There will be a Celebration of Life held on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 1:30 pm at the Wheatland Funeral Home in Strathmore. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alberta Children’s Hospital or Alzheimer Society of Canada.
