It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Marina “Faye” McCarthy share the news of her passing on October 27, 2024, at Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, N.S.Mom was born in Windsor on July 16, 1941 and grew up in Avondale N.S. She was a daughter of the late Stanfield Benedict and the late Ethel (Marsters, Benedict) Bernier.
Mom’s greatest pleasure in life was to care for her family. Her devotion to dad and us kids was second to none, she just did what needed to be done. She also gave free advice at times, which sometimes we appreciated, sometimes we didn’t. We always knew it came from a place of love and sometimes found out that she was right, and we were wrong.
She shared something special with each of us-
She loved the years she and dad spent taking Matt and Luke from one end of the Atlantic provinces to the other cheering them on at ball and hockey games.
She and Mark enjoyed many cups of tea and talks when he dropped in to see what she needed done.
Our brother Jeff’s passing tore her apart but in true mom fashion, she carried on, that’s how mom was. Jeff brought out “the silly” in her, always tantalizing her, and she loved it.
And finally, “The Golden Girls”- many shopping trips with Tammy and Donna. Shopping, big lunches and by the end of the day, so much laughing, we were weak. She would say every time, “We had a great day!”
She loved her grandchildren and her great grandchildren dearly and was always happy to see them. Some of her older grandchildren will remember her as “Nanny Goose” or “Gram” and all have cherished memories of her and her love. She never lost her sense of fun, and she became the kid they wanted to play with when they visited.
Many years ago, she and dad were able to fulfill their dream of owning a camp on Panuke Lake in partnership with Dale and Tammy. Many happy years were spent there with family, sometimes bodies sleeping on the floor much to mom’s happiness. Being the hard-worker that she was, she always found something that needed to be done or she would invent something, anything to keep moving.
Mom would feed anyone that crossed her doorstep, no one walked away from her house without first eating. Her cooking and baking were well known. She happily gave fresh homemade bread to neighbors, friends and family. The first question she asked when you visited,” Did you eat?” And then the fridge door would open, a cup of tea was in front of you whether you agreed to a cup or not, and three different kinds of cookies or sweets were on the table. It always made her happy to fill bellies.
One of our family’s favorite memories of Mom was watching her and dad dance. To us, they were magic on the dance floor and they both loved it so much. I think we all saw a few people moving to the side of the floor to give them space and to watch them.
Mom was a giver, never a taker. She was selfless, never asking for anything for herself. She is and will be missed more than words can say.
Faye is survived by her children Tammy (Dale) Page, Mark (Karen), Donna (Floyd) Wile, Luke (Shannon), Matthew (Rhonda); Daughter- in – law Julie McCarthy; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; Brother Morris Benedict (Ella); Mom also leaves behind Donna’s fur babies, Morty and Missy, which she loved with all her heart.
Faye is predeceased by husband Clary; son Jeff; Grandson Patrick McCarthy; Sister Joyce (Raymond) Harvey; Brothers Clayton Benedict, Dale Benedict, Glen Bernier; Step-Mother Muriel Benedict; Step Father Tony Bernier.
Cremation has taken place with no visitation or service at Mom’s request. Donations can be made to your local SPCA in memory of mom, she would like that.
