Ettie Hailman, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on August 2, 2024, in Toronto. She was born on October 5, 1924, and lived a long life filled with love, laughter, and devotion to her family and friends.
Ettie was the loving wife of the late Jack Hailman z”l, for 52 years,and together they created a warm and inviting home where they enjoyed hosting large extended family gatherings at 24 Glen Park Ave. Ettie’s engaging smile and sense of humor made everyone feel welcome.
Ettie is survived by her children, Shelley Stillman (Murray), Aaron Hailman (Elizabeth Smith), and Steven Hailman (Francine) as well as her sister, Faye Hibloom. She was predeceased by her parents Harry Horowitz z”l and Sarah z”l (Friedman), brother, Irving Horowitz z”l (Fern).
Ettie was adored by her grandchildren, Shawn Stillman (Carrie Swartz), Sari Stillman (George Roter), Axe Hailman, Robert Hailman, Ely Hailman (Myriam Rigaud), Shira Furman (Vitali), Amanda Hailman (Rob Schwartz), and Mindy Soltar (Chris), as well as her great-grandchildren, Jolie and Cooper Stillman, Adam and Liam Furman and Nora and Ruby Soltar. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Aliyah Rotman z”l.
Ettie’s caring extended beyond her immediate relatives. She was flexible in her outlook on life and understanding of changing social values. In addition to her dedication to her family, Ettie was a passionate volunteer and volunteered at Lyndhurst Lodge, the Baycrest Centre and Adath Shalom. Later in life, she was active on the Social Committee at 8 Covington. In addition, she was a repeat blood donor. She also enjoyed knitting and playing Maj, and she found joy in visiting Casino Rama.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lorna Magana and Noemi Samonte for their exceptional care of Ettie over the past years
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, at Steeles Memorial Chapel, with interment at Bathurst Lawn Cemetery. Shiva will be held at 269 Hidden Trail.
The family requests that donations be made to the Hailman/Horowitz Endowment Fund at Baycrest or the Aliyah Rotman Fund at the Toronto Foundation.
Ettie’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, and her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been touched by her presence. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
