Estelle Katz (Née Newman)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Estelle Newman Katz on Thursday, January 25 at the age of ninety-three. She was the proud mother of Janis and Barbra, and the cherished companion of the late Stanley Lipsey for twenty-three years.
Born in Montreal to the late Rose Selinsky and the late John Newman, Estelle graduated with a B.A. from Sir George Williams University (Concordia) in 1952. She was a nursery school teacher for many years, where she developed programs, trained staff, and consulted with numerous professionals to provide for her students. She then became a medical secretary in both private practice and the Jewish General Hospital. She was School Committee Chair at both the Junior High and Senior High School levels, and volunteered on a number of political campaigns, from local to Federal. A lifelong lover of music, she was a regular at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Opéra de Montreal. A devoted member of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, Estelle worked on a number of committees, and served as President of Sisterhood/Brotherhood. She became an adult Bat-Mitzvah in 1990.
She was a wonderful cook, always willing to try a new dish or kitchen tool and was an avid collector of cookbooks on any cuisine. People loved being invited to dinner at her home, even on leftover night. In her free time, she pursued her passion for the fine arts and textile arts. She studied in her youth with Arthur Lismer at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. She was a painter, quilter, sewer and doll maker, to name a few. She also had her own ceramics business. Her home is a gallery of her work.
The family wishes to thank the following for their care and support: Dr. Robert Weinman, Nurse Meriem El Bakkali and the staff at St. Mary’s Family Medicine Centre; Nurses Emmanuella Aurelien and Claudine Blain, and Dr. Wong from the CLSC St. Laurent; Marcie Klinger and the people of Golden Home Care, and Estelle’s caregivers Bea, Vivian, Ola and Meridlyn. A special thank you to Joanne Marchitto, who has looked after our family for over forty years.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W. on Sunday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. Burial at the Temple Beth Sholom Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Shiva at her home Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday and Tuesday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of gifts, donations can be made to the Estelle Katz/Stanley Lipsey Family Growth Fund at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom – (514) 937-3575, Auberge Shalom – (514) 485-4783, the Montreal SPCA – (514) 735-2711, or to the charity of your choice.
