Emile Amirault
Emile Alphonse
Amirault
There are not enough words in the dictionary to capture the life of
Pépère. Born and raised in West
Pubnico, to Robert Joseph and Zenai Madelaine (d’Eon)
Amirault, his mischievous ways start January 9 1933, better known as
the Big Holiday. Stories from his younger years are plenty and each
carries a similar theme. The stories exude confidence (it may have
been enhanced by time passed) and a witty attitude; a young Emile
correcting Mme Priscille that her math, in fact, did not add up. Ever
wonder how the nickname Lassie came to be? Picture a young boy
following his uncle Octave everywhere he went, and soon enough, he
became the «Good Dog». Then the show Lassie aired and, BOOM,
what a good dog Lassie.
Aging did not slow this man down. He worked within the
fishing industry, whether being a cook (which makes us all laugh) on
boats, trucking catches across the eastern seaboard or processing the
catch on land until the ripe age of 80. Did you know it would take 8
hours to truck a load to the Halifax International Airport back in the
day? And he could do it in one day! It still leaves us in awe that
Pépère was able to navigate the Big
Apple’s traffic and street ways with a loaded truck, and
lived to tell the tale!
If you came across Lassie, there was
always a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face. Car rides were a
favourite, and the destination did not matter. Thankfully,
Pépère would lug his grand-daughters and friends
to many sport practices and games. A pack of cards could entertain for
hours, teaching his daughters and grand-daughters how to play crib and
skunk those who play against them. Had a slight odour to your breath?
There was always a peppermint in a pocket to be shared. Not all lives
are straight paths, however, Pépère would have
shown you his medal for staying sober for 40+ years.
Fortunately there was a dedicated woman who
entered his life to keep him grounded during 61 years of marriage.
Rosalie Hélène Amirault (née
Clairmont), reeled in the young man and they married November 18 1961.
Settling into the homestead, they raised 3 daughters; Amelia (Mia),
Zella and Shari. His 3 daughters gifted him with the greatest joys in
his life, his 6 grand-daughters, Marie-Josée, Justine,
Léa, Caitlin, Abby and Casey, and most recently newest
great-granddaughter River. All of them carry in their hearts pieces of
the man, the myth, the legend, Emile (Lassie)
Pépère. As we know, all good dogs go to
heaven.
He was
predeceased by brothers; Harold and Basil and a sister
Isabelle. Visitation will be Saturday, September 9, 2023
from 10-11am followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11am with Fr.
Cyrille Assihou officiating all taking place in St. Peter’s
Roman Catholic Church, Middle West Pubnico. Interment to
follow in the parish cemetery. Donations in memory may be
made to St. Peter’s Cemetery Fund. On line
condolences may be forwarded to the family at

The
family would like to extend a thank you to the community of Pubnico
for the support throughout the years, whether it was a pick up for a
ride, a game of cards and any other form of entertainment. It did not
go unnoticed and all was very much appreciated. A very big THANK
YOU!
