Obituary
The family of the late Elva Irene (Hayman) Langille are saddened to announce her passing on Tuesday, June 27 at the Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou. Elva was born in Balfron to the late Harry and Cecelia (MacPherson) Hayman. She had moved to the Oddfellows home in May, 2022 and we could not have asked for a better extended family to care for her. Elva and her husband Calvin spent many years enjoying each others company whether it was on the road through the Gaspe while he worked for CN, at dances and house parties, or at home on the farm in Balmoral. There were lots of stories of fast cars, fun pranks, and friends. Elva was an independent woman who worked hard and was a task master. After a serious car accident in 1979 she was left with steel rods in her back – which she broke off twice getting firewood and making hay. She loved to bake, go to dances, knit (the most beautiful socks and mittens) and play cards (no cheating allowed) – but the work always had to get done first. Elva also had a keen love of dogs and was a skilled horsewoman. Over the years Elva was very active in community organizations. She canvassed for many charities and was an active member of the North Shore Seniors Association, North Shore Fiddlers Association and was also a long-time member of Freedom Rebekah Lodge in Tatamagouche, where she held several positions. She loved to drive, and really liked a Hemi. She would often be found out on the road with her cousin Lillian or friends for a Sunday drive on back roads – and even into her late eighties could back a car into a spot most people wouldn’t try. She always had her own car was often heard saying – “when I am ready to leave, I am leaving, and you better be ready – I don’t wait for anyone”. No matter what time of day or night if you needed picked up – she dropped everything to go. Elva was predeceased by her husband, Calvin and sons, Alvin and Richard; siblings, Mildred, Lloyd, Carl and Reg. She leaves behind sons, Ken (Charmaine), Orleans, ON; Paul, Tatamagouche; and Gary (Jess), Halifax; daughter, Charlotte (Tom), Tatamagouche; as well as Tracy (Michael), North River; siblings, Marjorie (Victoria, BC) and Donald (Diane), Rothesay, NB. She especially loved her grandchildren, Jason, Nicole, Chris, Sarah, Zachary and Justin. She also had eight great-grandchildren; Lucas, Emily, Marissa, Brianna, Ella, Liam, Scarlett and Abigail. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 2 in Coulter’s Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, July 3 in Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. Interment will follow in Hamilton Cemetery in River John. Family flowers only. Memorial donations can be made to Freedom Rebekah Lodge in Tatamagouche, Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou or a charity of your choice.
