On Wednesday January 18th 2023. Eluned Robling (nee Jones) a talented classical student, musician and teacher, and loving wife, mother and grandmother – passed away peacefully, at home, in her bed; at the age of 81, after a long battle stemming from a fall, aspiration pneumonia an induced coma, scoliosis and osteoporosis.
Eluned grew up in Tonyrefail, Wales, as a fluent Welsh speaker and passed her 11+ exam to attend Tonyrefail Grammar School. She became quickly recognized as a top notch scholar and successfully obtained high marks in her Ordinary and Advanced Level examination results. While at the Grammar school she was noted for her contribution to the cultural life of the school leading her house team, to achieve distinction in the Eisteddfodau.
On graduation from the Grammar School, Eluned accepted a position as an undergraduate student at the University of Wales, Swansea. She was quickly recognized for her outstanding results in the Classics where she was awarded the Ellen Stanford Scholarship as the undergraduate student achieving the top marks throughout the University of Wales. This allowed Eluned the opportunity to study for her Master’s Degree in Classics. Along with expertise in Latin and French she also studied Greek and wrote her Master’s Thesis on ‘The Religious Cults of Roman Wales’.
On August 17’h 1963 Eluned and Les Robling were married in St. David’s Church, Tonyrefail. In 1968 the happy couple emigrated to Ontario with two of their children, Michael and Andrew.
Eluned taught at Grey Highlands Secondary School, Flesherton, Ontario and at Trinity College School, Port Hope.
Eluned will forever be remembered as a kind, compassionate person, who cared for the family and how important family life was to the upbringing of her children and grandchildren. As well, she was a loyal member of the church, especially the Church of St. Mark’s, Port Hope.
Eluned was the proud and devoted mother of three children: Michael (Srividya); Andrew (Sue) and Katharine (Donald). She is survived by her husband Les, her three children and her seven grandchildren: Bronwen Wilson (Leland); Owain Ruttan; Sian Ruttan; Emma Robling; John Robling; Amy Robling and Bryn Robling.
There will be a private family service which will be followed on June 16th by a celebration of Eluned’s life upon her interment- details will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome, in her memory, to St. Mark’s Church, Port Hope.
