Obituary
With heavy hearts, the family of Elsie Lewchuk announces her passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge – Long Term Care on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the age of 86 years.
Elsie was born on January 21, 1937, to Onufrey and Katie (Surcon) Oneschuk on the family farm northeast of Stenen, Saskatchewan.
Elsie attended Frame Lake School and completed her Grade 8. Elsie had always wanted to be a teacher but the year she was to enter Grade 9, a hailstorm wiped out the entire farm crop and the extra money needed to continue schooling was not available.
Elsie helped with her family’s farm. She enjoyed being outdoors rather than inside the house. Helping with farm chores, from feeding the chickens, pigs, cows, horses to collecting eggs, milking the cows and then separating the cream for milk, butter, cottage cheese in their summer kitchen. She was the tomboy who helped her father by operating the farm equipment driving the truck and tractor.
When Elsie was old enough to work away from the family farm, she helped neighbouring families as an extra helper. She then had an opportunity to work as a waitress in Benito, Manitoba, but soon found employment with the Silver Grill in Canora, Saskatchewan, and stayed at the Hryhoriw’s boarding house on First Street. While working at the restaurant, she met Orest Lewchuk, and they married on May 4, 1959.
As a newly married couple, Elsie and Orest travelled with the Lewchuk family business, Lewchuk’s Midway & Shows and Elsie helped in the food concession trailer.
After a couple of years of travelling with the midway, their family unit was soon to expand, and Elsie was now content to be a full-time mother and homemaker. Elsie was known for growing a huge garden, canning a lot of jars of pickles, sauerkraut, tomatoes, and crab apples fruit from the backyard’s orchard. She baked many loaves of bread, buns, cinnamon buns, scuffles, and cakes. There was a constant making of perogies, cabbage rolls, and beetniks.
When her family was grown, Elsie babysat in her home for a few years. After that, Elsie joined Avon and was the local rep. Still maintaining a large garden, she became a member of Canora’s Farmer’s Market, selling her baking, garden produce, and serving lemon meringue pie. She also held the position of president for several years.
In addition, Elsie and Orest operated O&E Concession, a small concession trailer, selling popcorn, candy apples, cotton candy at many local community events in the area.
In April 2017, Elsie was admitted to long term care, and resided at the Canora Gateway Lodge for almost 7 years before her passing on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and loved her. May she rest in peace.
Elsie was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Lewchuk; her parents, Onufrey and Katie Oneschuk; 2 brothers in infancy, brothers Nick and Eugene; sister, Mary Kozmeniuk; and her brothers-in-law, Pete Bazansky and Mike Kozmeniuk.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Orest; her 5 children and their spouses: Cheryl (Bob) Williams, Terry (Susan) Lewchuk, Donna (Larry) Tarr, Kevin (Allana) Lewchuk, and Leonard (Bev Wandy) Lewchuk; her 7 grandchildren: Bryce (Sarah) Williams, Ashley (Evan) Schick, Amanda Tarr, Dillon Lewchuk, Lance (Janelle) Lewchuk, Jordelle Lewchuk, and Logan Lewchuk; 2 great-grandchildren, Laken and Anna Schick; and her sisters, Dora Bazansky and Ann (Morris) Hay; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, Saskatchewan. Interment will follow at the Canora Cemetery.
