It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dorrie Kitchen (nee Platt) on October 12, 2024. Dorrie is lovingly remembered by her husband Harry, her two daughters: Suzanne (Adam), Kathryn (Mark); grandchildren: Lucas, Reese and Chase; brother: Bill (Barb) Platt and cousin: John (Donna) Platt.
Dorrie was born in Winnipeg on January 25, 1944, to Winnie and Wilf Platt. Growing up, she spent most of her summers at Jessica Lake Lodge with family and friends where she helped out in the General Store, cleaning cabins or ensuring there was ice in the fish cleaning shack. Many of her memories consisted of fun times at Jessica Lake and she continued to spend summers there as Suzanne and Kathryn grew up. It was a special place for her.
Her career at Eaton’s Department store in the Wages department. It was there that she made many lifelong friends. She did take time off to be a stay-at-home mom eventually returning to work once the girls were in school. When she returned to the workforce, she worked at Canadian Lutheran World Relief and then the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. From there she went on to find her true calling as a recreation facilitator and resident companion at various care homes in Winnipeg and Selkirk. Helping people was her true passion. Anyone who was lucky enough to have Dorrie in their life was able to see her kindness and generosity.
Dorrie’s faith has always been very important to her. She joined Luther League as a teenager and continued to grow in her faith. As a proud member of Christ Lutheran Church, she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for many years. In her later years, she made St. Luke’s Zion Church her home and continued to be an active member in the choir and church activities. Dorrie’s love of singing was enjoyed by many when performing at weddings and funerals.
Harry and Dorrie were married on February 10, 1995. For the past 30 years, they were not only husband and wife, but best friends. They both enjoyed spending time with friends usually playing cards, visiting and always having a good time. They often took drives through Kildonan Park and other scenic places in and around home while enjoying a McDonalds coffee.
Dorrie absolutely adored her grandchildren. She beamed with pride when she was with them or when anyone asked about them. She was proud of the young adults they have become. Up until her time in the hospital, she never let a special occasion go by without a treat being dropped off to celebrate Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter or any other holiday. She was an awesome aunt to her nieces and nephews and has always had a special bond with her first-born nephew, James Platt and later in life with Harry’s niece Karen and nephew Darren.
Dorrie’s love for family and friends was unwavering. She was fun-loving and had a great sense of humor. Her giving heart will forever be remembered.
A celebration of Dorrie’s life will be held at St. Lukes Zion Church, 2903 McPhillips Street on Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00 PM. A link for the service will be provided for those that are unable to attend in person.
The family would like to thank everyone for the kind messages and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorrie’s memory to The Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
