We are saddened to announce the loss of Ella (nee Sturm) Wechsel, at age 91 of Beaverton, Ontario, who passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at the Lakeridge Health Centre in Oshawa. Ella Wechsel was born in Brienne, Bessarabia to Alexander and Klara Sturm on April 16, 1931. From the time she was a young girl until her passing, looking after family was central to her life. Ella warmly welcomed visitors to her lovely home and beautiful garden, with open arms, and a generous heart. Ella was an extraordinary person, with a bright mind, who worked hard all her life. Arriving in Canada in 1952 with nothing, she and her family built a successful farm operation. Right up until her passing, she supported the family farm, including being the book keeper. Ella was much loved by her children Erika (Dave) McMullen, Edgar, Wilfred (Barb), and Garth, her grandchildren Mathew (Amanda), Anna (Martin) Hunt, Monika, Alex, and Connor, her great grandchildren Harlee, Westin, and Hayden, and her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her dear husband Hugo and her brothers Herbert, Arthur and Otto. Ella is survived by her brothers Hugo Sturm of Uxbridge, Robert Sturm of Germany and Wally Metzgar of Edmonton. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or Community Care Durham. The family is most grateful to the Beaverton Ambulance Service, Lakeridge Health Oshawa and the kind medical staff at 7C. A celebration of Ella’s life will be held at Ella’s home on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 12 – 4 p.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
