It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Beth) Brandson (née Durnin), at the age of 93 years, February 11, 2023.
She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Leon Arnod Brandson, on September 11, 2015, her parents Regina «Queenie» Vashti Durnin (Jones) and Robert Wilburn Durnin, plus four of her siblings, Jackie Burch, Judy Beer, Walter Durnin and Frank Durnin
Beth is survived by her Sister-in-Law Joyce, brother Rod Durnin, brother Bob (June) Durnin, son Lee , son Steve (Diane) , grandson Stefan (Simone) , grandson Brandur, granddaughter Brooke , great grandson Finn and great grandson Allan. Special mention to Lee’s first wife Keneva Kunz, who was like a daughter and remained close throughout the years.
Beth was born in Elstow Saskatchewan on August 10, 1929. Not long after her birth the family homesteaded at Maidstone Sask. She was the 2nd of 7 children. In 1937 the family moved to New Brunswick. Beth was 7 years old and would turn 8 during the trip. Beth graduated high school in Bath, New Brunswick. In 1946, the family returned to Manitoba as Beth’s parents had purchased a farm at Deerhorn in the Interlake district. While in the Interlake, Beth taught school on a permit west of Eriksdale with a salary of $20.00 per month less room and board, yet she was able to send $10.00 per month to her parents. When Beth turned 21 in 1950, she received a small inheritance from a great uncle. She used $500.00 of the inheritance to enroll at Success Business College on the north side of Portage Ave. in downtown Winnipeg. There she enrolled in bookkeeping and later said it was the best investment she ever made, paying continual dividends throughout her life-long journey. Leon and Beth married in 1951 in Fort Frances Ontario. They later settled in Charleswood (Winnipeg) where they raised their family. Beth worked as a bookkeeper at several places including PetroCanada and Paul’s Hauling. In 1974 they semi-retired into cattle-farming, first as a partnership with John Hogan north of Tyndall, Mb. and soon after on their own in Libau, MB and finally near Eriksdale in the Interlake overlooking Burnt Lake on Suffren Rd.
Beth was a wonderful mother, wife, and Amma (grandmother). Beth was a quilter and seamstress who could turn fabric scraps into beautiful family heirlooms. She was also a wonderful cook and could make any meal into a feast. She was very much a part of the day to day farming partnering with Leon spending many a long summers day operating the hay rake, staying ahead of Leon, who was operating the hay baler. Mom loved country and gospel music singing old tunes; she also would regularly recite by heart poems she learned in her childhood. She enjoyed journaling and getting visits or phone calls from family.
Many thanks to the personnel at Donwood Personal Care Home, especially Nurse Ruth and all the staff on two South.
Cremation has taken place, and by Mom’s request her ashes will be placed together with Dad at the Lundar Lutheran Cemetery.
We invite family and friends to get together, either in person or in spirit, on a date TBA this spring.
«When the Lord saw her weaken,
he came to embrace;
to show her the way to a better place.»
«Love you Mom, miss you»
