Obituary
Eletena “Tena” Minnie Byvelds nee Pollard
24 March 1955 – 2 July 2023
Tena was born in Botwood, a small port town in the Northern reaches of Newfoundland. She grew up in a close knit family of a dozen children raised together in a loving home in the valley. Tena’s childhood instilled within her all the sensibilities common to a Newfoundlander—grit, humour, kindness, and a love for family and newcomers alike.
Tena left Newfoundland for a life in Ontario at a young age. It was there that she had her greatest adventures and two children, Pete and Chris. In Ontario Tena would become an entrepreneur, caregiver, and rebel rouser. She opened “Tena’s Place”, a restaurant in Whitby where locals would flock for the comfort of Tena’s home cooking and thoughtful advice. Many will remember Tena for her laugh and fiery independence. She was a fierce demolition derby competitor, often among the last standing in a sea of well-dented metal.
Graduating with top marks in her class, Tena would go on to become a nurse. Her quick pace and gentle care served so many people in need of a kindred spirit. For all who knew her, Tena was equal parts kindness and spunk. These qualities would become the bedrock of a beautiful relationship with John Brown. Tena and John had a mutual love for music, travel and family. Tena loved to take road trips, singing country songs along winding roads with John, and his daughter Vanessa.
Tena loved her grand and great grand kids most of all. When her first grandchild Tyler was born, she trembled with joyful tears as she held him for the first time. For Tena, life was made to experience the thrill and wonder of grandchildren. Tena is survived by her children Peter, Christopher and Vanessa, her grandchildren Tyler, Mackenzie, Jacob and Dylan, as well as her great grand children Kacen and Phoenix. Tena was predeceased by her mother and father Loretta and Roy Pollard, her brothers Max and Harold, and her loving partner of 28 years, John Brown. She will be deeply missed by her siblings and their spouses Evelyn and Don, Gladys and Bill, Sue, Helen and Ernie, Dale and Sheila, Wanda and Johnny, Tony and Debbie, Ruth and Dan, Bill and Diane, Pat and Brian. She will remain in loving memory of her nieces and nephews, the Brown family, and friends.
“In life, we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place, no one else will ever fill.”
