Hearl, Eleanor May – Passed away peacefully at Extendicare Oshawa on Monday December 26, 2022 just two days shy of her 98th birthday. Born in the village of Coldwater, Ontario December 28, 1924, maiden name Eleanor May Abbott, she had three brothers Buck, George and Ron and a sister Gwen all of which passed away many years ago. At a young age she moved to Toronto to live with an aunt and uncle. At the outbreak of World War two she found work in the war industries. She was one of those young ladies known as “Rosie the Riveter” doing her bit for King and Country as she used to say. After World War two she found office work with the Crown Life Insurance Company in Toronto. Not long after she met the love of her life Roland Stafford Hearl, an ex-army veteran who at the outbreak of World War two was the youngest Sergeant Major in the Canadian Army and Eleanor and her sister-in-law Lil always kept the newspaper clippings to prove it! In November of 1946 Eleanor and Rol were married – a marriage that lasted fifty-nine years until Rol’s passing in October of 2005. For many decades Eleanor and her husband Rol were extremely proud members of the Royal Canadian Legion. Eleanor was also a very proud member of the Rebekah Lodge and kept up her membership until the day she passed away. Eleanor also worked for Zellers for 42 years. Besides service as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and working for Zellers for 42 years, she was an avid golfer and loved dancing. Her love of dancing led her to join a ladies dance group in Scarborough called the “Scarborough Show Stoppers”. They danced and entertained all over the place for many years. One year in particular, they did a scene from “The Wizard of Oz” at the Seniors Jubilee Show at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto where Eleanor played the role of the Tin Man. When she wasn’t serving in the ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, golfing and dancing in the Scarborough Show Stoppers she was taking in live plays in Toronto with her gal pal group and taking in ball games at Skydome (Rogers Centre) to see her beloved Blue Jays. In later years, if it was Friday at noon hour she was having lunch with her gal pal group at a certain fish and chip shop in West Hill Scarborough. She leaves behind her son Warren and his wife Irene and her beloved grandchildren Christopher, Katharine, and Kimberly and Kimberly’s husband Mike, and her great grandson Gibson. She had a long life and a life well lived to say the least. As a tribute to Eleanor the family would greatly appreciate contributions to the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region. Cremation has taken place. A private family service and interment to take place at Pine Hills Cemetery, Veterans Section, Scarborough, Ontario. Arrangements entrusted to ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME, 124 King Street East Oshawa. Condolences can be made by visiting www.armstrongfh.ca
