In Celebration of
Eleanor Jean Kimmins
December 7, 1929 –
September 20, 2024
It is with love and sadness that we announce that after a long and well-lived life, Eleanor (nee Woods) passed away in her 95th year in Hamilton. Her wish to die in her sleep in the home where she lived for more than 60 years, was granted, on September 20th.
She is survived and loved by her children, Eric, Norma and Karen (Earl Withers) and forever remembered and cherished by her grandchildren, Erica and Jonathan, Colin and Tristan (Anne-Lise) and Keith and Bryan. Predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon (2017), daughter Janet Partington (2001), son-in-law John Baxter (2024), as well her parents Doris and Edward Woods and brother Arthur.
Eleanor was born and raised in Brantford where, as a teenager, she was swept off her feet at a roller-skating rink when she met Gordon, who was the love of her life. Married in 1947, they shared almost 70 wonderful years together, building their lives and family in Hamilton.
That included becoming members of MacNab St. Presbyterian Church which was a focal point of their social and spiritual lives for decades and where they made many lifelong friends.
Eleanor was a well-read, inquisitive, creative and cultured person who enjoyed the arts. She taught herself how to play the piano as an adult, was a voracious reader who always had a book on the go, and was an accomplished knitter. She particularly enjoyed exposing her grandchildren to the theatre and music, especially children’s concerts conducted by Boris Brott. She also appreciated nature – whether via camping trip adventures with family or puttering in her garden. When all her children were in school Eleanor started part-time work at Birks Jewellers store where she learned a lot about silver, china, crystal and jewelry.
In their retirement years, Gordon and Eleanor travelled extensively throughout Canada, the UK, Europe and the Middle East. They also took up lawn bowling, were long-time members at Roselawn Bowling Club and participated in tournaments across southern Ontario. Bridge was another major past-time for them and Eleanor continued to play weekly with a local seniors group right up until her passing.
After her husband’s death Eleanor volunteered at the Mission Services thrift store where she manned the jewelry counter until Covid hit. As well, once a week she helped children at her local elementary school learn to read and was signed up to do that again this fall.
While she certainly experienced her share of adversity and sadness, Eleanor also enjoyed a very fulfilling, happy life. She was a generous, supportive and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who taught us all a lot about resilience, kindness and love.
A private internment will be held prior to friends and family being received at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton for visitation on Thursday, September 26th at 11 a.m. memorial service at 12 noon with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers donations to MacNab Street Presbyterian Church, Neighbour to Neighbour or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
