Growing up in Carleton Siding, Mom was the third youngest,
and the last remaining, of a large family of eleven kids. After
attending Prince of Wales College, she went on to work as a
stenographer at the Experimental Farm in Summerside. In 1950, Mom and
Dad married, built a house together, had four kids, and made it our
home rich with special memories of family, friends, and great
neighbours. Mom was an active member of her community and church over
the years, belonging to the Summerside Kinette Club, the Summerside
Curling Club, as well as volunteering for the Red Cross, PCH
Auxiliary, church nursery, and working with our Dad at Summerset
Manor.
Home and family were what Mom valued most, and we will
forever cherish our memories growing up. Times with family, friends,
and our ‘cottage days’ will never be forgotten.
Mom was a mother and grandmother first – the strong matriarch of our
family – the glue that held us together. She believed in connections
and whether you were family, friend, or neighbour she always made
great effort to phone, send cards, casseroles, sweets, and gifts, even
when it was physically hard for her to do. Mom was an avid gardener,
and her beautiful flowers and lawn were enjoyed by many passing by and
proudly recognized by the city of Summerside. She found peace and
contentment in her gardens and her wish, which she valiantly achieved,
was to live out her days in our family home. She was the strongest and
most resilient person we know.
We really appreciate all the church friends, cousins and
neighbours who supported her with your phone calls, visits, treats,
prayers and acts of kindness. We know, because that is what she talked
about.
Special thanks go to Mike and Rachel Cameron (you were always
there when we couldn’t be and we could not have done it
without you), to Pastor Cory Somers (you have brought her, and us,
much peace and comfort), Home Care and Meals on Wheels (for your daily
visits and friendly chats) and to the Paramedics, Doctors, nurses and
staff of the Prince County Hospital who tended to her in her final
days. Thank you.
We will miss you Mom. You were a legend in our eyes –
«Til We Meet on that Beautiful
Shore.»
