Elaine Churchill, affectionately known by many names including Mom, Mini, Aunt Elaine, T’Laine, Laine, Mrs. Churchill, Phyllis/ Philly (if you dared), or simply Elaine, passed away on her own terms, surrounded by family, after a hard-fought battle with cancer, following a remarkable 19-year remission. Her strength and spirit were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Elaine was the beloved wife of Charles Churchill for 47 years. Daughter of the late Phyllis and Lloyd Chapman and daughter-in-law of the late Muriel and Charlie Churchill. She was a devoted mother to Jason (Cynthia and sons, Jaiden and Jensen) and Marcie (Mike), and a loving Mini to her grandchildren, the late Lizzy, Gabby, and Autumn. Elaine was a dear sister to David (Brenda), Janice (Dana), Clare (Linda), Rick and Suzanne, and sister-in law to Sharon (Jim). She was also a cherished Aunt (and Great Aunt) to many, both by blood and by choice, and a dear friend to countless others.
Elaine’s professional journey began as a hairdresser, a career she enjoyed before transitioning to become an Educational Assistant throughout Northumberland County, where she made a significant impact on many lives.
Elaine found great joy in being outdoors, particularly at the family cottage in recent years. She loved gardening, walking, golfing, playing games, floating on the lake, or lounging by the pool. Her active involvement in the community was evident through her participation in curling, the Apple Blossom Festival, and volunteering at Northumberland Hills Hospital. Forever planning, either for the next vacation or family get together, Elaine had it all written down and organized.
Elaine’s warmth, kindness, and community spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We are all grateful to have had her in our lives.
Special thanks to the staff at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, Dr. Smerdon, Dr. Mulé, and the wonderful staff at the Northumberland Hills Hospital Cancer Clinic, and the many health care providers that provided home care to Elaine.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Keeler Centre in Colborne on Friday, June 14, from 1-4 pm. A small service and speeches will begin at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to a local charity of your choice that reminds you of Elaine, would be appreciated.
