Eileen Pike Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of our dear sweet mother, Eileen Pike (nee Mercer). Mom was born in Bay Roberts on June 26, 1928, to Wilfred and Marcella Mercer. Mom was the eldest of five children which included: Samual, Mary (Parsons), Lorna (Robertson), June (Pearce) and Ross. She is survived by her brother, Ross (Marilyn) and her sister, Mary.
Those mourning her today and always are her children: Paul (Selena), Linda (Bob), Sarah and Bronte; and treasured grandchildren and Bob’s daughters, Alexis and Sarah Marshall (Mike Lemmons). Included in the list of mourners are her brother, Ross (Marilyn); sister, Mary; brother-in-law, Roy (Eileen) Pike; sister-in-law, Margaret Brown; as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends. We must also make a very special mention of her best and closest friend, Jean Lane, who will forever miss her.
She is predeceased by her brother, Samual; sisters, Lorna and June; sisters-in-law, Florence and Frances; and her brother-in-law, Henry.
She was a kind soul with a generous heart who knew the sacredness of sharing a cup of tea and a cookie with a friend.
Bay Roberts was always ‘home’ to her in so many ways. She lived, cared for her siblings, and worked there with her family for 28 years. We were fortunate to visit often and fondly listen to her recollection with vivid description, various stories from those formative years.
Upon meeting our dad, James (Jim) Pike and courting for 4 years they moved to Stephenville where they, like all those around them became ‘pioneers’. They broke ground to build their homes, worked and raised their families. These pioneering people came from all over the province, and quickly learned to rely on each other. The friends and neighbors that were made during this time were long lasting and, in many ways, closer than family! It is in this community that they raised their two children, Paul and Linda.
Following our father’s passing in 1999, our lovely neighbors, supported her like sons and daughters would care for their own mother. We will always be grateful for the care that was provided her for those 14 years.
Mom joined my husband, Bob and I in our home in St. John’s in 2013, when the challenges of home ownership became too much for her. This past 10 years are filled with memories which we will always cherish. She enriched our lives in ways words cannot express.
We cannot thank Genevieve Flannigan enough for the care, kindness and compassion she showed our mother over the years she stayed with us. Mom lovingly looked forward to spending time with Genevieve each week.
We would also like to thank the kind, compassionate and skilled people who cared for our mother at St. Clare’s hospital during her brief stay there.
I can’t believe you’re gone Mom. We will love you always and cherish the many gifts of you we carry with us. A life well lived. An example to us all.
Eileen will be resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road to allow family and friends in St. John’s an opportunity to say goodbye to her. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, December 19th from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. Funeral service will follow in Caul’s Chapel at 3:00 PM. She will be then taken to Stephenville where a brief service will be held at First United Stephenville, following which she will be interred next to her beloved husband. Service details for Stephenville to be announced.
If you wish to make a donation in her memory, please feel free to do so to a charity of your choice.
