Obituary of Edward Barry Landles
It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Edward Barry Landles on Monday, September 16, 2024.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Linda; sons David (Leanne) and Brent; daughter Shannon; grandson Kristjan; brother Rick (Cindy); sister Donna; sister-in-law Jan; all his nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, Una and Percy Landles; his brother Ken; and his sister Barbara.
Ed was a very hard-working individual who always made sure that his family was provided for. He started working at a very young age with numerous odd jobs before landing a position at Coca-Cola where he spent over 27 years. He finally retired after delivering for Canada Bread with the help of Brent. His long years in sales meant that you couldn’t go anywhere with him because he would ditch you and find someone to talk to. He always made a quick trip a not so quick because he loved telling stories, jokes or just standing around talking to some random person. If you needed a random fact or story, that happened no matter how many years ago, he was the one to ask- just not if you were short on time!
Away from his work he was a die-hard football fan of his beloved Winnipeg Blue Bombers and more recently the Minnesota Vikings. Every weekend during CFL season we would spend the entire weekend watching games. If we were out and he was going to miss a game, he would tape them and would get mad at anyone that tried to talk about them before he could watch. If there were two games at once we would have two televisions in the living room so that we could watch both games. I nearly lost my life at just a few days old when he nearly won on a Grey Cup ticket and he threw me at the ceiling (thanks for catching me, Mom). He also volunteered with the East Side Eagles where David and Brent both played. No wonder that all his kids grew to share this passion for football as well.
He loved the outdoors and we spent so much time camping when we were young. From travelling far distances to explore a campground he found or just spending weekends at Bird’s Hill Park, we visited so many beautiful parks and explored the outdoors because of him. His favourite part was sitting by a fire at the end of the day. He would go fishing, even if it wasn’t his favourite thing to do, just to spend time with his sons. These were some of the ways for him to disconnect and relax.
Dad always lit up the lives of everyone he met with his shenanigans. Here are a few of our favourites. When Mom would call and tell him to “go in the cupboard..”and before she could finish the sentence, he would hang up to go stand in the cupboard. Then there were all the times people called the house mistaking him for one of his sons and asked “Is your Mom there” he would say “No but here is where you can reach her” and provide her phone number. There was the time when David was young instead of feeding him Cream of Wheat for breakfast, he made him a nice warm bowl of breadcrumbs. Also, when Brent was playing football as he was lying on a stretcher to lighten the mood, he told an inappropriate joke (Yes,that one!). Then, anytime we would tell him that his sister Donna was coming to visit he would tell anyone in earshot that “you will know it’s her she is the one with the cowboy hat”. What we do know is our lives will be a lot duller without him as he was forever our kibitzer.
There will be no formal service but the family would like to invite you to spend some time together doing what he loved best, telling stories.
The Celebration will be Wednesday September 25, 2024 between 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the South Transcona Community Centre, 124 Borden Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that you make a donation to a charity of your choosing.
